Transmission Identification

I want to know how you tell what transmission came off what car, and even how to tell what year its from. Like an Identification plate or stamping on the tranny.

if anyone has a link or could explain

there is usualy a gold sticker on the tranny going vertical along the bell housing. usually a letter followed by a number eg: j1-00897 kinda thing.

I'm going to by a tranny, so i wan to know what im getting and from what year. I searched all over HT and theres nothing on it, not even links

j1-00897

the tranny model would be the first 2 digits example j1 so thats off a first gen b16 motor just like your VIN says in it ed,eh,ej,ep the chassis code
