Trans Problems

I've been noticing that my tranny is acting up.

I'm starting to have problems with my tranny, I think.

The car get's jumppy in 1st gear when I start the car and I need to rev the engine higher to get rid of it, happens in 2nd sometimes too.

I'm also having problems shifting smoothly especially quickly which presents a problem when I'm over taking on a 2 lane highway hard to shift from 4th to 5th and if I push it fast it will grind.

I'm losing confidence in the tranny and I'm getting a little nervous over taking on 2 lane highways.

What's my problem? Clutch worn out? Syncros gone?

I find it hard to believe 5th gear synchros have worn out, since 5th gear is the least used gear and usually when engaging 5th gear it means you're not really revving the **** out of it. most ppl even racing on the highway go up to 3rd, maybe 4th gear, but at redline in 4th you're going way too fast for public highways so it's most likely you'll slow down before you shift into 5th.

also the sensation you describe in 1st and 2nd gear sounds like clutch chatter to me. it's highly possible that your clutch may be glazed or contaminated.

but seeing as how I can't drive the car, much less inspect it over the internet, I recommend seeing Buddah for a proper diagnosis. He'll take good care of you Im sure.

contaminated, well the flywheel area is kinda open around the inspection area, or if the starter was ever taken out.... not likely though.

glazed, if the clutch ever overheated from abuse or a novice driver.... its possible. don't worry, even when my car was brand new the clutch chattered a lil bit, generally in cold weather.

Good news boys,

I figured out what was wrong. I checked the clutch fluid, DUH. and the resevoir was empty! THere was some fluid in the line to the master though.

I started bleeding the system and the fluid was BLACK. *smack my head* SO I have DOT 3 in there now while I was for a new Master from Handa.

I think I'm going to replace both the master, slave and fill it up with DOT 4. What do you guys think?

I think I'm also going to flush the transmission fluid.

Thanks for the help Buddah.

Okay,

Master is on back order =/. They say it's going to be a week +.

Slave is out and replaced, now all I have to do is wait for the master. The lines are all open though.

The lines are aluminum right? is it okay to leave them exposed to the air for a week or two?

You can PM him.

He works for a general mech shop.

You can also go to Mister Transmission for a free inspection so you can find out what they think is wrong.
