Tranny smell...
This could be a stupid question, but I wanted some other ppl's opinions.
Vehicle: 2000 SiR coupe.
Every now and then (maybe once a month or less I'll notice this), under normal driving conditions, I can smell a gear-oil smell (manual tranny fluid). It's not strong, kinda faint, but I can smell it. I've looked for leaks numerous times only to find the bottom of my car bone dry. Tranny fliud is full, topped it up a short while ago. No leaks from the axle seals either. The tranny shifts fine. Sometimes crunches into 5th (I hear thats normal for an SiR 5 speed tranny). Original clutch (starting to slip under hard shifting).
Just curious why I would smell it time to time....I can't figure it out.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

gear oil does NOT smell like MTF.
I'd say old cv grease smells more like it. Give your boots a good luck over, just run your fingers against all the creases along the boot see if you can pick up any grease. If not.. the drain plug uses a crush washer that could cause a tiny leak, but not one strong enough for you to smell, but doesnt hurt to look.
If that both checks out.. do what zeeman suggested about the p/s system

Everything looks good....I think it may just be because I commute where there are alot of big trucks and I never thought it could be coming from one of them, I think that is the case.
Thanks for all the help non the less!
