Tranny problem? GRINDING when IN THE GEARS?
Hey guys, im looking at buying a teg im looking at as early as today. Now it has a slight problem from transmission? I want to know what kind of problem it is and cost to repair, to see if its worth me buying this car.
Ill be VERY specific
The car shifts 100% fine, without any problems, it does not pop out of gear nor grind going into ANY gears- it feels like its 150% normal...except for this noise.
The noise does NOT happen when im in nutral and reving the car, clutch in or out...no difference ..no noise at all. There is no noise enguaging the clutch IN or OUT at ALL. The noise ONLY happens when im actually IN the gear and driving under load, and it happens from like the first gear to the third gear, a constant grinding/buzzig noise comming from tranny that continues to match the revs of motor in acelleration, it then goes away.
So to recap, noise DOES NOT HAPPEN when enguaging or release the clutch AT ALL, NO noise AT ALL in nutral when reving clutch in or out. the noiuse ONLY happens when DRIVING the car when its actually IN the gears 1-3, and the noise is a constant noise that increase with the RPMS. Shifter and clutch play is 150% normal and perfect.
ps. he says he put in a new clutch a while back...could be true or not

knock a grand off his price, go buy a new tranny... otherwise id walk away from the sale... unless he has already incorporated a new tranny in the the sale price.. any tranny repair is expensive cuz of the labour just to crack it open, so expect the worst.
thats just my 2cents.

Marty, could it be the throwout bearing? The noise I'm getting from mine goes away when I depress the clutch but when I'm in gear (any gear) it makes that noise. I've read that that's usually a sign that it's the throwout bearing.
Sorry to jack this thread.

when you engage the clutch it (the release bearing) rides up against the pressure plate..
that means it would be making the noise "more" when yer foot's on the clutch..
but yer fine in neutral right??
probably the bearings on the (shyt forgot the name of it), let's call it the secondaries for lack of a brain-fart term or again, the final drive
when yer in gear the flow goes *IN (from motor)------\ _____ /------*OUT
when yer in neutral the flow goes ------ neither the final drive or the secondaries are spinning

ooh, actually if it's still there in neutral as well then chances are good it could be the input bearing..
when you engage the clutch the input shaft slows (clutch plate slows as well)
tho again, if it's only in gear you get the noise it's secondaries or output

to test Marty's thoughts ... drive it in first with the noise get some speed (not beyond the speed limit though) and then pop it into nuetral if he's right the noise should still be there and should slow down as the car slows....

the input shaft should be the the only thing spinning in neutral with the clutch dis-engaged..
