Tranny Problem

It's happened from time to time on my '98 Auto sedan..

the tach revs usually about 3k rpm whenever I drive so no hardcore redlining, when I accelerate, the car sometimes doesn't upshift and keeps reving up to about 5k, then upshifts.. seems as if there's a lag between the shifts.

I recently did a tune-up, tranny fluid changed..

could be the bands in transmission,

bbarbulo 17-Sep-2003 09:18 AM

so even if you back off the throttle, it won't upshift? Maybe your TPS is not reading right?

Umm, no bands in a Honda automatic transmission.

Back to the question, it could be a shift solenoid. It is possible that there are some codes stored in the PCM that might help with diagnosis but you would have to go to the dealer for that....

I'll take a drive tonight and give an update on the situation, I'll try to explain further.

But from what I've experienced.. it continues to rev for another second before shifting into 2nd. It happened from 2nd to 3rd as well.

There is only one solution, a auto to manual swap!! :D LOL

Try to figure out when this happens... cold or warm, throttle position, etc.

If it happens all the time under all throttle positions, I'd agree with MY SiR, but if not... inputs to the PCM may be compromised.

Some have told me it may be the ATF, but I recently had that flusheds and changed, I'll check again just to make sure

bbarbulo 17-Sep-2003 04:26 PM

I'm assuming you checked that you had the correct type of fluid (ie. OEM Honda ATF) and the right quantity? Right? No leaks?

I know for my car (99 version) Under normal driving conditions, it switches usually between 2 - 3, but when I press it hard on the gas, it doesn't switch till like 4 - 5 depending on how hard the gas is pushed. Maybe gas pedal cable is stuck??

imported_Tmak 17-Sep-2003 05:11 PM

I bought the ATF from Honda myself so I know what's in it. And no I haven't checked yet but will today.

D dot T it doesn't happen all the time, I'd say 2 times when I drove about 100km's

imported_Tmak 17-Sep-2003 09:03 PM

Just checked the ATF, it's at proper level

while driving there's a lag sometimes while upshifting, sometimes it even twitches when shifting, not smooth like usual.

I don't think it's my engine mount, I recently had the driver side replaced and the other 3 were fine.

never had a auto honda transmission, or auto transmission in any of my cars for that matter.

I don't know how difference mazda tranny's are but my dad had that problem with his MPV and mazda mentioned something about the solenoids i think near the IM.

just a hunch because the problem sounds like the one my dad had.

bbarbulo 18-Sep-2003 09:16 AM

Well, Tmak, I'm not sure how good you are at diagnosis... but first get an OBDII scanner and read all the sensor values to see if they are correct --> lordm can do this. If so, you have the input side of the computer taken care of, then proceed to diagnose the output side - solenoid that is. I'll see if there is a testing procedure for these... and how to know when to replace one, but just so you know... this isn't like a tire rotation... I hope you are confident in your skill as a mechanic. If you are not comfortable with that, it's best done at Buddah's or at the dealer.
