Which Tranny do I have?
Its time to replace my clutch and im not sure exactly what tranny I have. Its a cable tranny but repainted, in a 90civic. Judging from the ridiculously short gears and highway driving id say its a Y1 or a S1/YS1 but how can I tell for sure? I havent checked with the clutch manufacturers yet regarding how interchangable b series cable clutches are or are they very specific to each tranny?
thanks. |
88-91 B-series trannies use a different clutch then 92-01 B-series trannies. So you only really have two choices.

JDM and USDM? There would only be JDM for my gen of tranny no?I will have to check part #s to see if there the same i guess, but is there a way visually to tell them apart? So when ordering a clutch my application would be a 89-91 JDM b series clutch?

92-93 GSR YS1 short geared clutch would work

with the same pilot bearing and throwout bearing? Im looking for a larger range for easier ordering. Is it safe to say 89-91 JDM b series clutch? 92-93 GSR will work aswell? whats a short geared clutch? And does it matter if its JDM?

Im getting mixed ansers here.

"89-91 B series trans all use the same clutch disc. 92-01 All use the same clutch disc weither hydro or cable. All B series 89-01 use the same pressure plate/flywheel."
Found this make sense?? How sure were you on your imput Peter? |

When ordering a clutch, just get a 1990 integra LS clutch. If you go to partsource and ask for a 89-91 JDM b-series clutch, they are going to look at you like you are on glue. |
Thanks Andrew, I would be looking to go aftermarket but bottomline I can order a kit(disc, pressure plate, flywheel, throw out bearing and pilot bearing from a 90 ls right with no problems?
Just incase the manufacturer doesnt have a 90 ls app. what other cars would work? |

Found this make sense?? How sure were you on your imput Peter? We can't be certain which tranny you have, especially since you are running a b20 if I remember correctly. It could be a pre-92, just as easily as it could be what Cynikal said. However, the 92-93 GS-R trannies are pretty un-common, so its almost safe to say you have a first gen JDM b16a cable tranny. Since that b16a cable tranny is a pre-92, you will need the small spline application, hence the 90 LS application will work. |
an easy way to know is to count the teeth on the input shaft, then count the grooves on the new clutch disk before buying it. This will save you from buying the wrong clutch.
Provided you have the small spline tranny, you can use a clutch from a 1990 or 1991 LS integra. |
