Towing capacity of 93 SI?
 

I was wondering if anyone knows what the capacity for this car is? Mine is basically all stock, with 100k. Is it a good idea to be towing on this car or not? I would like to tow 550 lbs ( one motorcycle + trailer), occasionally 1000 lbs (two motorcycles).

Can anyone recommend a good place to get a hitch installed?

I'd really hate to see this happen... it's just not safe, especially from a stopping point of view. I mean you can tow it ok prolly.... it's just that stopping all that weight would be dicey with those tiny lil Civic brakes. Civics weight about 2300 ish pounds, you are talking about prolly adding nearly 25 - 50 % more weight and trying to stop it with lil stock brakes. I definitely do not recommend taking such action.

i would definatly avoid this for the issue of braking honda brakes arnt made to stop that much weight and force caused by that extra weight, try to find an alternative way like a different vehicle if you have one

Hmm... I was thinking about the strain I would be putting on the motor and perhaps the frame, I didn't really consider the issue of braking.

What sort of level of modification would I have to do to get sufficient braking? IE if I have Brembo brakes, would this be enough, or not?

I tow my small fishing boat all day long without troubles, its about 7-800lbs total (boat, trailer, motor, equipment). The car I use is a 92 dx hatch. Its rated for no more than 300lbs at the toung (the down weight of lifting the trailer toung off the ground). Theres ways to lower the toung weight since its directly related to C of G. Total weight is said to be 2000lbs! But I would never exceed half this for any significant trip. Keep in mind this is my beater car, so the extra strain on it doesnt concern me. I keep it in perfect mechanical condition, but its resale value is of no concern to me. I would never tow with a civic that has any sort of real value.

Btw, I hardly notice the weight when pulling, and as for braking the car stops it NO problem what so ever, but im not going to deny the extra pressure and obvious strain on the brakes. The pads and rotors will have a shorter life. But to be honest, I hardly notice the trailer back there while accelerateing.

The key here is regular inspections of component ware to ensure safety, and stay off the brakes as much as possible, downshift and always be looking a few extra miles ahead so you can coast to stops rather than doing allot of heavy braking. Accelerate gently from stops, and never exceed the speed limits.

I towed with my old 94 cx hatch. I towed about 1000 lb but i wouldn't go over that. just rember that you towing something and your all good. i have gottin all my hitches at U-haul good hitches and they instal everything at a fair price!!!

U can tow it and it wouldn't be a problem. If there is a problem the tranny will go 1st because it's not meant to carry that much weight. If u use it once or twice u should be fine. If u tow it often it can damage your tranny. Is better to tow it with a mini van or a V6 car or a big sedan car.
