Too much motor oil. Is it bad?

Hi.

I thought I check my oil today and it needed to be toped-up.

I put too much however, and it exceeded the max point on the dip stick. This happened once before too. I know this is not a good idea, but it happened and I don't really feel like getting underneath and pull the drain plug. I have spent too much time underneath the car latlely....

So, is this a big deal? Probably not. I thought I ask anyway.

Thanks for the comments.

I asked a mechanic friend the same thing. He said that overfilling the oil causes the crank to whip air into the oil, reducing its lubricating efficiency. However, even 1/2 litre too much should not be a problem, according to what I was told.

I dunno about grenade, but you'll definately kill all your seals with too much oil

I think it will just build too much oil pressure, and if it gets to high, then the dipstick will probably pop up and spit oil allover the engine bay... seen that before...

IT is very bad, you can burn out your spark plugs, if the oil splashes up.

the only thing you really need to worry about is if you put more than 500 mL in...other than that, youre ok....but if its more than 500 mL over, then Id drain the excess out...basically, if the oil on the dipstick is 1/8-1/4 of an inch over the max mark youre good to go

Thanks man. I needed that!
These guys were begining to scare me! You see I shift at 5000 flat so what these guys are saying is that my motor should be under ALOT of pressure.

However, its not much. I guess the level is about less than 1/4 over max. Should be alright....

Thanks for the comment guys.

Strausswalsh is correct with the oil being whipped up air is created and so then moisture is too. This can lead to bearing seizure!! But a lil too much ain't gonna do that.

You should be fine if you are using synthetic... Almost every synthetic has a property that eliminates "bubbling" or "foaming" caused by overfilling or just air in the system. Only regular oil will be susceptible to foaming.
