tire noise?
I just got for the first time 17" wheels. they are Konigs. Toyo tire size 215, 40, 17. I swapped out the stock wheels on my 92 lude. I noticed now that when driving there is a constant whirling/hallow sound. also when driving it sounds like I'm driving on gravel at all times. it makes that type of sound. I'm not sure if this is normal or not but it is alot louder then the stock rims. I don't think any rubbing is happening. any input is appreciated
thanks |
got the same problem, i heard its balancing..cuz i also swap rims recently, and apprently ive the same problem as u

The sound your hearing probably has to do with the tread of the tire. Depending on the way the tire is made, the tire may make a lot of noise or very little all. Yokhama Parada's are notorious for tire noise whereas my General Exclaim's are very quiet.

I got a set of yoko parada on 205 40 17 and yeah they make a lot of noise where my buddies wonder wtf is wrong with my car.
|
i'll get them balanced tomorrow and see what happens. If it's just noise then i gen live with it but i'm afraid that it maybe somethign else, not sure what though
|
balancing them wont get rid of tire noise
|
i had yok's parada they were so noisy but they held the road really nice. Most likely its the tire tread you hear. Like mudders on a truck the bigger and wider spaced pattern of tread will give alot of nosie. Verses a tight patterned tread, with little spacing between the blocks/ pattern.

Tire wear can also cause excessive noise and irregular tire rotations. Maybe your tires need replacing or try rotating them. Performance tires are usullly much noisier then all season touring type tires.
|
i went to try to get it balanced this morning. I talked to the guy and he asked me if there was any vibration at all. at speeds around 110-120. i felt nothing. tire tread is excellent 90%+ they look almost the same on all four. so i'm assuming it must just be tire noise. they are toyo proxies.
the noise "also when driving it sounds like I'm driving on gravel at all times. " this was due to under inflated tires. this is ok now :) |
i dunno, they say its not balancing, and its the tread, but ur situation is tat u have gd tires, so it cant b tread, try balancing and see if it helps
b/c my tires are almost done, and not only do i hvae those woobling noises, the car also shakes wen i go above 110km/hr on highway, as in shaking of the steering wheel like mad..and ppl in the car would feel the car shaking |
the tires are toyo FZ4. i read mix reviews about this and those that complain they are really loud. any inputs?

Originally posted by ek98 i dunno, they say its not balancing, and its the tread, but ur situation is tat u have gd tires, so it cant b tread, try balancing and see if it helps b/c my tires are almost done, and not only do i hvae those woobling noises, the car also shakes wen i go above 110km/hr on highway, as in shaking of the steering wheel like mad..and ppl in the car would feel the car shaking Any kind of shudder or shimmy at speed in a balancing issue. The noise factor stems from the tires and other components. Edit: From looking at the tire tread. A lot of the Toyo's tread seems to be perpendicular to the rotation of the tire. Only the center section is directional. THis is probably done to aid in the evacuation of water. However, the large amount of perpendicular tread on the tire probably accounts for the noise your hearing. |
I had the same Toyo tires on my 03 last summer and I found them loud too.
|
it might sound stupid and i'm not sure if proxes are directional or not but if they are make sure they're rotating in the right direction .... had a couple of buddies forget to do that and experienced what you are describing ....
|
they are mounted correctly. i'm guessing it's just the tires since I don't feel/see any problems with the rims/tires itself

Check the reviews on the internet. A lot of the time the reviews include the amount of noise the tires make. It is always a good idea to check reviews before you fork out a couple hundred bucks; I do anyways. You never know, maybe the reviews for these tires include: don't buy these tires unless you have a loud stereo to cover the tire noise...
