i may be putting on 175/65/14 winters on my EL fitment will be alright? look stupid?

175/65/14 is an ef size... one size too small for an EL, so you will essentially be riding lower than if you had the correct size. and yes, it will look ridiculous, but skinnier tires are actually better on snow and ice.
