Timing Belt
 

I got my civic second hand and never got a service book with it, so I am trying to find out when I should change my timing belt and water pump. I am at 120K right now.

Also any quotes on the price of parts and labor for this job would be appreciated.

its right around the time it should be changed now...unless it was just changed...but then you wouldnt know really until you inspect

Normally the timing belt is scheduled to be changed around 100,000 km. What I would recommend doing is trying to get ahold of the previous owner and asking them if they did it. If it hasn't been done, or you can't get ahold of them, do it. With most items on the car I would just say leave it and wait until it breaks, but with the timing belt, if it snaps, your engine is toast. I am not sure, but I think parts (timing belt, water pump) will run you less then $200 and you could do the job yourself if you have tools and patients.

Is there any difference if I buy a TB from Honda Dealer($61) or from parts supply store($31)?

If I were you I'd get the belt and water pump inspected before buying anything. My 89 civic which was owned by one person before me went 245k before it finally snapped.

inspect the TB before you change it.... if it needs to be replace, replace the waterpump as well........ and go for the OEM ones.... stick with OEM products when it comes to engine parts IMO...

First of all you cant tell if its been changed recently by inspecting it. I have done tonnes of them and they all look the same, once you remove it and look for cracks and dry rot then you sometimes can tell. The tell tale sign that it has been changed recently is by looking at the waterpump. The color of the alumanum pump wont match the rest of the engine where it sits in. If thats the case then you know that the wp has been done recently, any normal person would change the belt at the same time.

you have to remove the belt to inspect for cracks!

You won't see any cracks along the outside, is along the inside of the teeth that you can see cracks.. At which point, if you got it out, replace it anyways.

With a part as important as a timing belt, I would suggest buying OEM. They are probably the same, but with OEM, I never worry about fit, quality, or craftmanship.
