timing belt = pwn3d

check this out.....OEM belt, 40,000km on it. Doing 4000rpms in 5th cruisin' over the skyway bridge in hamilton coming home from work.
Engine quits, no pops, bangs, clunks.
Tow it home and when i tried to start it, the p/s pully was moving but the cam gears weren't....didn't sound like there was any compression.....i thought the belt was snapped for sure.
Took it apart and found this...

Theres like 12 or so teeth missing off this belt. The water pump wasn't seized, with all 4 pistons mid-stroke both cams moved freely, so the dizzy isn't seized.

Anyone seen this before? What causes it? Only thing i can think of is that the tensioner let go enough to let the oil pump gear rip the teeth off.
I'm using stage 2 cams and the head is milled a bunch, so i figured there were bent valves for sure. Put a new belt on, did a valve adjustment and it runs fine.....IT RUNS FINE!!!!!

this tenisioner, spit/splitfire or whatever? I have seen this on cars put together by them.

Strage on the T belt, **** happens i guess, does any other places of the belt have any ubnormal wear? Are you running heavy valvetrain? Also, it is possible you still could have bent a valve, just not enough to cause any serious problems. Do a leakdown test just to make sure everything is still sealing properly!

I have never personally seen this.

yoru valves can be bent and your car "run fine" then a couple weeks later you will drop a valve into the cylinder

so I woudl say leak down it

I mean stage 2 cams and head milled how could you not bend the valves..?

not to mention you put 40,000 kms on a timing belt with stage 2 cams reving past stock rev limit...? yoru asking for trouble

you belt looks like it just separated

seeign how your mr engines why I would pull the head and have everythign checked

thats the plan dingus.
Yes, i'm running an aftermarket valve train. But only for about 30,000km of the 40,000km on that belt. I'm just not looking forward to bi-annual timing belt/water pump changes.
I'm just really glad that i could put it back together ($35 for a new belt) and it run for me to get to work and back t'ill the weekend.
After inspecting the belt futher, i noticed that all of the teeth were starting to separate from the belt.
I also did a compression test and got 170, 180, 185, 180. Tested almost a year ago got 190-195 across the board.
I just really don't want to have to replace the valve guides, seals (again) and get another valve job/resurface, along with new valves and a headgasket. The valves i don't mind so much, b/c no better time to get some flat faced valves.
Funny thing i noticed though, after doing a valve adjustment (a couple of them needed adjusting) my AFRs have been .5 AFR richer at idle/partial throttle than prior to the valve adjustment. The last time i did a valve adjustment, my afr's changed a little bit too though.....nothing 2 minues of live tuning with crome can't fix. I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this before....valve adjustment results in a change in afr's.

werid compression drop like that so fast. I run a high end valve train never had a belt tear up like that before id ive put just over 25***k on my current still no signs of wear on the belt.
