Throttle stuck

Yesterday getting off the 400, was slowing down to get off at hwy 88 and I noticed my car was coasting rather quickly and not actually slowing down....I apply the brakes, had to use little more than normal....down-shift to 4th, then 3rd....in between shifts I notice my rpms shot up...got to the stop sign...engine sat at 5000rpm.....so I take off and stop at the truck stop on the other side of the highway and pull over.....engine now sitting at about 3000rpm....I pop the hood and just before I get out I decided to jab the gas pedal one more time and it went back down to normal idle speed.....

At no point was the pedal stuck....I did have cruize on, on the highway....and I did shut it completely off when I slowed to get off the hwy....

I looked under the hood....cracked the throttle a couple times...didn't feel sticky at all....

Not sure what it could have been.....

Car is a 2000 SiR.

Any suggestions?????

hard to diagnose until you can recreate the problem. disconnect the throttle cable from the TB, make sure the throttle pedal and cable move smoothly, and make sure the TB moves smothly. if that's all good, then you just have to wait for it to happen again.

Would it be possible to lube the cable up with some WD40?

You might just a little water inside the cable and it froze?

^^ My first thought was a bit of debris in the cable or tb return spring.....

Don't think I want it to happen again...lol...was kinda scary not having that control over the engine...

you always have control over the engine... it's called a clutch.

When I put my foot on the clutch and the engine goes; BRAABABABABABAAA!!!! bouncing off the limiter.....yeah...thats control..........LOL

Seriously though, if it was that bad I would have just shut off the engine.....

well if you can't reproduce the problem under diagnostic conditions (in your garage) then there is nothing you can do to fix it since you can't see what the problem is. if you want, you can start replacing random parts for no reason other than to make yourself feel better. or you can check what you can (TB and throttle cable), and then if those check out ok, wait for it to happen again. you know you won't crash since you can clutch it and shut 'er down (but I dont' recommend that since you lose vacuum for brakes).

The thing is it was only stuck open a tinny tinny bit cause the rpms only went to 5000 with no load....so there must have been a piece of dirt or something stuck in the return plate so the tb couldn't quite close all the way...

Just wondered if anyone else has had this happen and if so what the problem was...

Sounds like I should lube the cable just to be safe....

you should really hope there isn't peices of dirt getting into your throttle plate area... I would think that's one of the things a filter would tend to prevent (or an inside out sock lol).

now if in fact your floor mat was not on the throttle (which happens a LOT with ppl and their oversized wintertime floormats) then really the only other option is the cruize cable froze up maybe? you said your pedal cable was ok and the throttle plate seemed to function smoothly. check the cruize cable...

Don't worry....I'm not the type to put an aluminum tube with an inside-out sock on it....lol.

In fact I've got a Bpi velocity flow stack with a huge-a$$ 8" diameter K&N cone filter on there (barely fits under the hood...lol).

Yeah the cruize or the cruize cable....like you said maybe it froze up or something....good possibility....I'll check it out...

That happened to me, same car....I was using my CC as well. I had to unplug my cruise module on the side of the HWY (the socket/plug) and it was fine. Tried to use it again, and it did the same thing.
I think that the Cruise unit is gone/sticking open. I couldn't shut the cruise off, it was accelerating on it's own. Just turned off the ignition and put it in neutral. Can't think of what else it could be. If you find out, let us know!!

thats why i hate cruise control... other than the nice ankle stretch every so often on long drives... but i just speed up real fast (the faster i go the longer the stretch) and stretch... then back to normal speed and keep going. pull the fuse for that **** out if there is one...

If in fact it is the cruise control, try to obtain a Helm's manual and see if you can change the cable or tackle the problem.

When I first bought my car the cc didn't work...I found there was a small little canister on the vacuum line to the cc vacuum diaphram and the top of the canister had broken off so the vacuum was just leaking all out and thus, the cc didn't work. Priced out the canister at honda....bout $90.....shea right! So I just by-passed the canister, took it out and put in a vacuum tube extension in place of the canister....the cc has worked fine ever since.....until the throttle stuck the other day...

I'm wondering if one of the vacuum line is leaking again or something....I do alot of highway driving and I like the cc cause it keeps me from speeding...

I think this is the stupidest idea.

Why just replace a part? How do you know its the TC? You dont. So why replace it?

^^ Yeah, I'm not replacing anything unless I know it's broken...

No point in replacing a good part....

IT HAPPENED AGAIN!!!!

Same place...getting off the 400 ...

This time I was able to open the hood while the engine was at 4000rpm steady...

I examined the cc diaphram unit and the cable....didn't see anything wrong with it...I moved the cables around a bit and the rpms came gently back down to idle...
