a throttle body let air into the engine via the intake manifold. Its pretty much just a round cylinder with a butterfly (plate) inside that opens and closes as you press the gas pedal....there is a cable (the throttle cable) that attaches to the throttle body butterfly from the gas pedal. There are also a few sensors on the throttle body....the Throttle Position Sensor (tells the ecu how much gas you are giving it), and possibly a Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor, some of the older t/b's just have a vacuum nipple for a vacuum line that goes to the MAP located on the firewall.
Yes a b-series throttle body is a good, cheap upgrade. Get a 2nd gen b16, b18c1 or b18b t/b as they are all 60mm and relatively easy to come across. However, you will need to port match the t/b to the intake manifold plenumn opening....the stock opening will accomodate a 56mm t/b, you just need to open it up to 60mm. Unfortunately, the intake manifold needs to come off the engine to do this, i mean i guess you could just shove a rag into the intake manifold and HOPE metal shavings don't go inside your engine, or do it the safe way and take the manifold off and clean it out afterwards.
