Thermostat?

Hey all,

It's me again, fair weather Ed. (the sol guy)

Man it's been a while since I've been around...

I've been having some temp problems and I'm hoping it's the thermostat, let me tell you the symptoms and you tell me if you agree.

THis past winter I noticed the engine running a bit cooler then 1/2 on the gauage. There was nothing I could do to get it to go higher than that.

Seeing as it was winter I figured that was why. Today I was driving pretty hard (highway) and everything is fine, then when I ended up in downtown traffic I noticed that my hood was steaming from the rain!!! The temp gauge showed half then.

When I first go the car it always ran at half in the summer and I never noticed rain steam like that.

I got back onto the highway and ran the car low revs at a nice speed, the cold misty rain cooled the engine, maybe too good, the gauge dropped almost to "C". Then back on the street it dove back up to half and started steaming again.

Everytime I got some speed the temp would DROP and then if I stop it would fly back to half.

Isn't it suppost to stay at half???

So tell me, is it the thermostat??? (Sorry for the long post)

yah it sounds like your stat is stuck wide open, change it out, flush your cooling system, make sure all the air is bled out. drive it for a few days again, if it continues then onto more trouble shooting...

I would definatly start with the stat anyway, its proper maintence so its not a waste if it deosnt fix your problem... im sure it will tho

the steam could be atributed to the humidity in the air, or you just never noticed it before cuz you wernt looking for a problem...

hmm.. yopu sure your rad didnt pop? you might have a crack, and thats why your loosing cooling...

Id get it nice and hot, then pop the hood look for any stram excapeing from a crack or hoses... usually you will see a white residue around the crack, even if its cold... most common spot is the head of the rad, right on top...easy to cheak

I though of that too but the engine is cooling...

Almost too well.

The part where it heats up too much could possibly be the fan too...
