Testing struts/springs?

Anyone know the best method when it comes to testing used struts to determine if they're blows or just about to blow? This of course being that the springs are seperated already. Same with the springs..
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

without a shock dyno, you can't be sure, but ... just work them with your hand a few times, checking both compression and rebound. see that both the fronts feel the same and both the rears feel the same. then time how long it takes them to come back to 'rest' position
