Temperature question

Temperature question
I have B16 swapped on EK hatch,
and these day ( temp around -10) my temperature gauage never reach middle or even far down from middle. Even if I drive 2 hour on high way, the temperature still appear about 1/4 only. I have a extra water temperature gauage on the side. sometimes even if reads that my water temperature raised about to 70 degree C, my engine temperature gauage stills not in proper location ( lower)
Is that normal?, will it harm the car, since it's not in working temperature.
I have no idea, why?
TOO high is bad, but too low?.....
thanks

you do realize....... on the highway your temperature will be down due to the cold winter air + 1xx km/h of air rushing through the rad WILL cool off the coolant quicker than stop and go/idling in traffic. Are you getting hot heat inside the car? or is it just warm.

It is not supposed to be in the middle. It should be somewhere around a third of the way up.
If it is lower then that, I would suggest you try to flush your coolant. Coolant/antifreeze keeps your engine cool, but also helps it from freezing. It might just be that your coolant is not doing its job properly anymore.

every one i have seen is just below the middle in an ek... i had the problem that my temp would actually go down on the hwy or long cruises... it was cause i was running an aftermarket thermostat and they usually have a fail-safe in them that when it fails it stays open to ensure the engine doesnt overheart (oem will close and the car will start to overheat).
i changed it and its been back to normal every since. and its not good to keep running it like that too long beause the components never get to normal operating temp. but i mean the engine will be hot regardless because there is combustion going on there, but just noti hot enough.

I do understand all your points. cold air with 1xx Km/h can provide a lot cooling power. but the thing is is that bad, quote from micheal, it seems bad,
The thing you mention about open and close, is it the circulation of the coolant? will it be possible that my coolant always flowing.
what can I do?
could it be any problem. I didn't do the swap, the previous owner have done it.. so I have no idea what's going on with the internal and the thermostats.
any other hits for it's actual effect the car and how can I fix it,
by the way where do the thermostats located under the hood
thanks

sounds like the t-stat is stuck open. mine will goe down to cold if i have the heat on high and the fan on high ont he 401.. or even the don valley. cheap fix. if you do it yourself.a its too cold for me to do it right now though.. maybe put some cardboard infront of your rad lol

my heater these days blow warm air not hot air,
but before, when the outside temp. is not that low, it used to blow hot air.
so the question is if my thermostats is done, why whould it bring the temperature down.
I think my thermostatus is ok, because I am receiving warm air only
besides, yesterday when I was on high way, when I kick up to 8000 RPM, it actually go to middle, and when I open the headter fan, it drop again. so I assume my thermostats is good?
but the S.... *** thing about this is, I Am not turning on my heater, even if I have to drive for 2 hour fron london to toronto.
I dare to do see those temperure DROP..
thanks for all the info

Your thermostat is stuck open. You should be getting Hot air. Not warm. Replace your thermostat. It's a valve that blocks circulation of coolant, which only allows circulation through the block and heater core when it's cold, and when it gets hot enough opens the thermostat through means of a wax pellet valving and then allows coolant to flow through the rad, what's happening is, it's not allowed to flow through just the block, thus not heating up quick enough, and not hot enough. So go get your $8 tstat and 50c gasket and do it.
your heater core is like a little rad, and when your temp is up, and you open the heater, the heat from the heater core gets sucked out and takes the heat from the coolant inside it, which circulates and cools the coolant down again, therefore resulting in your temperature drop.

yeah, and the reason your engine warms back up when you take it to 8000rpm is well, how can you expect something to not warm up when its rotating at 8000 rpm?
mine did the same thing, replace the stupid thermostat and it will go back up to half... and even -20 when your engine is up to normal operating temperature it should continue to blow got air regardless

lol. why wont you just replace your tstat? everyone is telling you to do it. i cant wait till mines done. iv got to drive from toronto to windsor next weekend and if i dont get it fixed im going to freeze my *** off all the way there.
