Well, this is sorta strange. Not sure when it started but when I brake hard (not like i do it all the time), there seems to be a knocking sound coming from the front. The knocking happens once as the car comes to a complete stop.

I wouldn't think it is the engine moving since the mounts are hard urethane. I don't know what it is.

I wouldn't think this is a common thing, but just a shot in the dark, anyone wants to take a stab at it and guess what it is?

im trying to hear the noise in my head, first thing that came to mind would be balljoints.

.. how old are your mounts charles?

There is no way that it is a motor mount. The mounts he has are pretty much indestuctable.

I think its ball joints as well.

I had something similar on my old Civic. When I braked, there was a clunl from the front end. It turns out that the brake pads had some play in them and were moving slightly. A shim kit solved the problem.

I don't recall changing any ball joints and also, when I did the SiR brake swap, it was all used piece, nothing changed.

So I need to change the front lower ball joints on both sides.

ya chris is def right motor mounts go bad all the time we have first hand experience with an older one breaking in two, ****s not made to be indestuctable, how does the company plan to make money?

My front pads have shims and it didn't sound like clunk or ding or anything tapping lightly on something else. It was like... "dong~~!!"

It felt like something heavy moved to the front and hit something then stopped.

well charles dont go changing your balljoints right away, there is no set maintence on bj's. Use a prybar to check if the lower bj is bad. Jacking up the wheel and checking for play by hand wont work since the lower bj is the load carrying balljoint, it needs load on it to really check for play

could be sway bar endlinks or ball joints, like the rest of the kind gentlemen already pointed out. I know you have a front sway bar.... worth checking anyways. inspect before replacement.

Perhaps OEM mounts I agree. However, in the context of street driving, those aftermarket extreme mounts are pretty much bulletproof.

yeah charles, sometimes binding endlinks make a popping noise. my buddy has an aftermarket rear sway bar and it makes all kinds of noise. I know yours is OEM SIR, but it's still a place to look.

at what point does the noise happen?? RIGHT when you stop when the weight is most shifted forward, or on the rebound when the weight from stopping begins to shift back?

The noise happens when the car comes to a near dead stop with the weight shifted forward. But if I brake at a normal pace, no knocking sound. The harder I brake, the louder the noise.

i know where bruno is coming from but I still doubt it would be a stabilizer bar, they normally making a very quick thud/click noise while that bushing/endlink goes over a bump, or when you are taking a good corner the opposite way it'll make a litte thump. Your problem lies within your front end (would be my guess charles) Just look it all over! sometimes these things come from a strange source.

Do you know how to check lower bj's? well if you dont.. jack the car up get a good sized pry bar and pry where the balljoint is. Your goal is to see if the steering knuckle has up and down play, upper bj's you can just check by trying to wiggle the wheel up and down, this is because the lower bj carryies the springs load on it, so it requires load to be checked, the upper bj has no real load on it
