Teach me about ODBI/ODBII :-) Difference?

So I'm looking into getting a 2nd gen B16 within the next 3-4 weeks...and I need to know about ODB stuff...

I know ODB2 is hard to chip making ECU epgrades a pain in the ***...

So do I get a motor that is ODBI? what does that mean? It has ODBI sensors on the actual engine?

Thanks

Since you car is a '98, I suggest getting a motor that's from a '98-98.

Ok now here's how the OBD system works with Civic's;
-'92-95 OBD 1
-'96-98 OBD II (version A)
-'99-00 OBD II (version B)

Now, all OBD II ECU's can NOT be chipped. Only way to run a chipped ecu is to get an adaptor harness that'll allow you to plug in an OBD 1 ecu into your stock car harness.

Main different betwen the OBD 1, and OBD II A and B systems is that the OBD II have more sensors and more emissions equipment. As well, OBD 1 vs OBD 2 motors thery use some different style connectors, especially the ECU. (they are not interchangebale w/o adaptor harness)

For your ride, using an OBD II version A motor and ECU will drop in w/o any problems.

Thx...but if I wanted to chip the ECU in the future??? Would it just be easier to get a ODBI engine and ecu? or should I get a ODBII engine and ecu and if I really wanted to chip it I would get an adapter and new ecu?

get an OBDII engine and ecu.

if you wnat to chip it later. you just need a converison harness and the equivalent OBDI ecu.

it is possible to chip OBDII ecu's. it's been done, but costs way too much. the little electronic parts needed total over $1000 USD

So what makes the "engine" odbII? the connectors and sensors?

extra sensors, and different connector points on the ecu.

ahhhhhhhh...so if im DEFINAtely planning on getting an ODBI 'chipped' ECU...then i might as well get the odb1 engine because...if i get an odb2 engine...the extra sensors wont be used with the obd1 ecu anyways...right?

i wouldn't put an OBDI engine in an OBDII car. generally going backwards with swaps is not a good idea. everything needs to be re-wired .. you're looking at alot of $$$$.. if you wnat OBDI, get an OBDII engine and get a converison harness with an OBDI ecu
