syncro's..

is there such a thing as aftermarket syncro's for the d series trannies? buying them from honda is fine but is there anything better that can handle more abuse or higher rpms?

synchro's are designed to be the weak link Rick..
it's better (and cheaper) to wipe them out than anything else inside the tranny..

imo, stay with oem..
if you really wanna spend money get the gears frozen

well i dont really "wanna" spend the money... but this new engine build i'm doing is probably gonna stress the tranny a lot more...

but what i'm wondering is like i've seen articles on car with trannies that have wider straight cut gears (i understand how that is benefitial) but they dont run syncro's... so like when i'm accelerating does that mean i have to wait for the rpms to drop to the according rpm for the next gear?

under braking i hardly ever dont rev the engine to where it wants to be anyways so i suppose thats half the battle from the syncro's point of view

here is teh deal punk

straight cut gears do nto need synchros because they will mesh with otu them, where as helical cut gears need synchros to mesh correctly

helical gears are also alot weaker by nature than straight cut's

so why do we run helical gears...well think of it this way put yoru car in reverse (straight cut gear) and speed up. Straight cut's whine like no other so that' s why we use helical cause they are quiet...a straight cut gear box known as a dog box will whine like crazy at speed

you can find aftermarket synchros but I'm sure that a oem synchro will be mroe than enough for the abuse, its' nto liek yoru putting 400hp threw them with slicks...jsut remember if there is any bur or chip on a gear it is useless and needs to be replaced because it's structural integrity is compromised....have fun tearign it apart...I jsut started tearign a ford 4 spd apart

well tearing the engine apart was simple... that tranny just boggles my mind...

so for straight cut gears, do i still need to use the clutch? cause i know dog engagement gears for other uses do not require a clutch...

and i'd imagine they'd be expesive if even available but do they make straight cut gears for d series trannys? if i had specs i for sure could make a straight cut gear cause its all striaght cuts... helicar gear making gives me headaches

your helicals will be fine..and yes you need to use teh clucth..well technically not but I sure woudl

your tranny will be fine...your not pulling 400 hp awd launches here..lol

and yes trannies are a bitch...you will need a press to press the gears off soo...and be very careful to press them off individual cause there are snap rings on soem gears that will tear **** apart if you get on the press to push all the gears out at once.. ..it isnt' to fun that's forsure

u sure you can buy aftermarket syncros for honda trannies?

My buddy scott when he built his b16 tranny to replace a worn syncro went to honda and they woulnd't sell the syncro seperate, it only comes attached to the gear so he had to buy the whole gear with syncro, which was alot more expensive.

hmm i personaly have never actually looked into... the good thing about d series trannies is that its cheap to just buy a newer one then to buy parts to rebuild one

true..but are very doable.....and to teh comment abotu incuding the gear with the synchro...it's probobly because of the fact that when a synchro is gone the gear willl grind which once it has a chip the gear is useless...it's structural integrity isnt' there anymore

i dont understand why someone would buy just a syncro only.
if you have the damn thing open change 1st to 3rd gears its just common sense so you dont have to go back in later.
