swaps. Part 2

swaps. Part 2
Is there any actual way to check the mileage on the motor or is it a guessing game? I know these performance shops say that the motors have less than 50km or whatever they say but cant they easily just lie just to sell you the motor??? In Japan the law is that you cant have a car past 100,000km is this true?

there is no way to know the real milage on the motor unless the entire car's been imported and then the motor was taken out

from my experiences with engines imported from japan, i would never buy one again. You never know how many km's are on it, you don't know how the previous owner maintained it, or didn't maintain it. There's no way to tell if the engine is a good running engine or if it burns oil or what sensors are broken until you actually get the engine in your car and try it. Sure there is a start up guarantee, but it sure would suck to have to pull the engine out of the car to get a new one, or to have to pay someone for labour to do a swap again b/c i'm pretty sure their start up warranty doesn't cover having to pay someone to pull the crappy engine out and put a new one in. Actually there are very strict guidelines (on their website) about their warranty.
I am in no way knocking teknotik, i've never dealt with them, but i hear nothing but good things about them. I am just telling you my experiences with imported engines.
The only way i would buy an engine is if it is in someones car and you can see it running and how it runs. This way you can talk to the person, ask him how often he did maintainance, and if their answers seem shady then stay away.. You can't do that with an imported engine, b/c no one will be able to answer those questions.
My few experiences with importers have been bad, my few experiences with private sellers where i can see the engine running beforehand have been good.

When you go to the shops, try to get an engine sitting in a front clip. Couple of the swaps I've done, I was able to pull the motor out of a front clip so I was able to see the mileage.
Or you know what, go and look at the front clips, if all of them are showing 100+KM on them I wouldn't trust em.
