yes you should... the shock rod being exposed to the elements is NOT a good idea. I've seen the chrome get all pitted and rusted, then when it goes into the shock it blows all the seals and starts leaking oil.

no its not totally necesary, but the life of your strut will be longer... heres why

when the shaft of the strut (strut rod) enters and exits the strutbody it passes through a very sensative seal. Any inperfections on the srtut rod will scrape and slowly deteriorate this seal, eventually leading to premature failure of the seal.

now assuming there is no dust cover in place, all the rocks and dirt and stones will fly up and slowly chipp away at the rod, causing these imperfections on the surface which will cause the seals to ware out sooner than they should...

So its more or less just extra protection to help lengthen the life of your strut seals.. Its not mandatory or a safety issue its just recomended, to extend the life of the strut...

what if i have progresive race springs... and when the spring/shock assembly is under load the top coils pretty much cover the shock rod? thats why i didn't put them back on to be honest... like it would take a damn sneaky rock to get up to the rod itself

remove the wheel and run the susp through it's travel ... use a stethoscope to listen for squeaks. It's likely that you've perhaps overtightened something or neglected to apply grease to a bushing.

If you look at a Helm's diagram, it points out every place where grease need be applied.
