how much power over stock would you make running stock internals?

I know 2 guys with just over 200 at the wheels with JRSC and stock internals.

Supercharged b16s IN MY OPINION are crap. They don't make enough power to really make the s/c efficient. IMO 4 cylinder, small displacement engines are better suited for a turbocharger. I know like 20 people with 275-300whp or just under on their turbo'd b16s with stock internals. But if you are gunna supercharge your b16 anyways, i'd stay away from the JRSC and go with a procharger/vortec supercharger. You will definately want an aftercooler/IC or meth/alcy injection b/c the IATs on the s/c'd cars are really high, which will rob power and induce detonation. |
I know http://www.tprmag.com/ did a report a few yrs back turbo vs supercharger vs supercharger. I just checked there site and I couldn't find it. However if I get some time in the next couple of weeks I'll look for my copy of the magazine and scan it up.

with a turbo setup there are also more options for upgrades/boost control whereas with sc you are limited to whatever pulley is on it. it is nice to change your boost level at the push of a button. the down side is it's more hardware to install. price wise, i think they are not far from each other though.

But seriously.. if you get a s/c get an aftercooler, you'll see tremendous gains, it'll lower IAT temps down a bunch. I would also recommend reading up on different kinds of injection to help raise the octane. Numbre one killer on s/c setups is detonation.. |
superchargers are good in the low end. crap at top, which is where b series vtec engines shine.
turbo's spool and generate boost higher rpm ranges, where b series engines shine. SC's, the boost is always there, with turbo - it's only there when you want it (when beating on it)... turbo is, imo, far better than a sc..a bit more work to install (charge pipes, intercooler), but far more practicle on a 4cyl. nothing sounds and feels better than the pull of building boost :D |

Yes a better way to make more PEAK hp is too turbocharge obviously. But if you want to be an auto-crosser or just want some city fun, a s/c isnt a bad idea. Instant boost, GREAT torque. But on a b16, its kinda wasted. I was going to s/c my b20, but I decided against it. Maybe i'll do it one day, but not now. But for the record, I would rather turbocharge than supercharge, just because s/c is very expensive if I was going to do it. Vortech kit, aftercooler, really great header, etc. |

for the money, a good b16 turbo setup would be way more beneficial..
as for the "sound"... a smaller turbo spools low. big fat turbos spool at higher rpms...(my garrett gt35r ball bearing for example...) |
I installed a water injection system on a JRSC, it worked out and there was an improvement on the dyno between using it and and pulling without it on.

What are you opinions with your experience? Personally, I would like to try it, but if my setup is tuned with water injection and a mechanical failure occurs, weither it be a leak, pump blows, out of fluid, whatever.. i dont want to detonate, so I dont see it being that partical..

i wanted sc cuz the car has no balls low end and i figure this would also give me an even boost thru out the power band, but excess heat at high rpm's is obviously something id worry about... would i have any overheating problems if i took the turbo route?
my mechanic is telling me to go with a t3/4 setup.. does the operational range of such a turbo provide sufficient boost in the high rpms? |
well there are so many t3/t4 variants its hard to say.
But yes, the right t3/t4 will give you decently quick spool time and will flow enough CFM up top to give you the power you're looking for. |
