Suggestions With 6th Gen Swap

I am new to this board, I am actually from altimas.net as I used to own a Nissan but I have recently coverted to Honda. Basically, I traded in my older nissan and my dad gave me his 1999 Civic EX (Canadian Version) This engine is obviously not worth working with which is why I have decided to swap.

My Budget is around $4000 Canadian. So far I am leaning towards a B16A2, reason being because of the compatibility of this engine with my car. If I am mistaken then please excuse me for my ignorance, I am not too familiar with the honda engines.

Anyway, I am looking for something that will be a fairly easy install in hopes it will cost less to do so. I am not looking for anything for heavy racing. I want something that has power, but will last, as I will be keeping this car for quite some time.

If there are any engine suggestions that would be great, as I am not too sure on how others have faired with certain engines. I am trying to keep in mind that a GSR or Type R engine would be way to expensive and hard to find, so please be more realistic in your answers.

My main priority is Price/Performance ratio. Also can anyone suggest any shops in the GTA that they have had a good experience with and are honest? I have looked at the sites affiliates, but I find them to be quite pricey.

im guessing that this is going in the sedan????
SICKKKKKKK

anyways.... a b16 would be a good platform to work with, yeah a bit low on torque, but a very competitive engine.

as for swaps. there are somethings that needed to be swapped over but ill wait till Barbulo wakes up and he can fully answer this for you

if your more towards the torque range u can go B18a/b non vtec which u will see in the LS, RS, GS integra's - this engine will be alot cheaper then the VTEC's

but if you decide you want to go faster in a sedan you can also boost it if using the NON VTEC motors, due to the longer gears!

p.s Welcome to the boards!
p.s.s ask yourself what you want?!?!?!

Chigga, a B18A hasn't been made since like 1992 or something

man's got a 1999 for the love of christ! LOL

Ok Moe_Mentum (creative ) welcome to Toronto Civic Club... and to the world of Honda tuning.

Few things I noticed from your post... 1st of all you come from a Nissan background. I'm not sure what year Nissan we speak of, but most of them had 2.0 engines in them... few 1.6L... so I'll assume you had a 2.0 or greater, which means torque. What you're looking for is torque. 2nd... you've done some research, you stated a budget, and checked with the affiliates. If these conditions weren't true, I would have locked this thread.

Now to answer your question... a B16A2 will feel not very different from your stock engine. In the city, anyways. On the track the extra HP would really give you great times... same on highway pulls. But the torque is just not there. The B16A2 was only available in limited numbers from 99-00 Civic SiRs. Many ppl pass of older JDM motors labelled B16A off as newer motors. Don't be fooled. You can also get a Del sol engine from the 96-97 model year, but those are even rarer and harder to find. MANY MANY MANY of these motors are stolen. My buddy bought 6 SiR Civics in a 4 month period from insurance co's, ALL of them missing their drivetrain and wheels.

Next step is the B18B from the 96-01 Acura Integra LS/RS/GS - these motors are cheap, plentiful, plug and play (easy install - easier than a B16A almost since there is no VTEC to hook up) and oftentimes you can find one that's not beat to **** like the VTEC motors are. This has the highest torque and displacement out of all the EASILY swappable motors. I'll explain the EASILY part later. These motors sell for about $1500-2000 for legit!!!! clean swaps right from the wrecker. You pay a slight premium, but you are sure to get a good engine. Be really careful buying engines... go to a reputable place to get one, and don't buy from the classifieds if you can... too many scams and beat up motors around.

A B18C1 and B18C5 those are Integra GS-R and Integra Type R motors respectively. They are the motors that make most Honda guys drool with envy. It brings a tear to my eye just thinking of owning one. The swap procedure is the same as a B16A2. A B18C is a JDM motor, and can come from the Honda Integra SiR or the Integra Type R. I'd stay away from these as well. USDM motors are way easier to verify in terms of origin and history. Only downfall... the motors are hard to find 1st of all, and they are hard to afford too!!

Now... those were all easy swaps.

There is also the B20B and B20Z from USDM and JDM CRV... I'm pretty sure you won't be doing this, but here is the scoop - they are "easy" to put in, in that it bolts in just like every other block. However, everything about it... axles, tranny, intake manifold, exhaust manifold... you'll wanna source from a base model Integra. This gets difficult and expensive real fast. Peicing a swap together is no picnic. This provides the best torque and driveability and longevity... but not so much so that it warrants all that work over the totally easy B18B.

H22A from the Prelude can also swap in, but THAT is a challenge.

Now, since you already checked with the affiliates, I can recommend Scott from ClubSi. PM loudubz to see if he has contact info for this individual.

for a ncie littel easy swap b18b with a gsr tranny..that will pull real nice unliek the b16 which will only pull from 5500-8000 rpm's

the b18b is a better startign point cause it is a) torquey in stock form
b) can be made to have decent all motor power
c) can be boosted easily with good reasults
d)can take alot of spray

the b16's high compression and low displacement hinder it in all motor and forced induction applications

it didn't strike me that he wanted a heavily modded motor... seems to me he's looking for a one shot deal, then expects Honda-like reliability that can only be attained with an Integra swap really. I'm boosting a D

differences are as follow's (these are basic differences)

the b16 is a high rev no torque motor
b18 has a longer stroke and more displacement so it can't rev as high but has mroe torque at low rpms, essentially you are making mroe torque and hp than the b16 threw 75% of the power band which makes it a better motor for booting aroudn town or for a coupe or sedan that weights more it can lug the extra weight around better

b18b does not have vtec
it can't rev to high
it has low compression so you can run regular fuel (saves money)

Alright! First of all I would like to thank everyone for there input especially bbarbulo for taking the time to write that out for me. It was quite a long time ago since I wrote this post, and totally forgot I had posted it which is the reason for my late response.

To answer some questions, I used to own a Nissan Altima 2.4Lite DOHC. Of course I do miss the torque and power that it has which my civic is lacking.

Basically what I get from this post is that you guys are suggesting the b18b with 140HP compared to the b16a2 at 170HP. I understand the logic behind choosing the b18b, but in a 1/4 the B16A2 has the edge am I right? I am just curious why most have chosen the b18b over the b16a2.

Also after reading through a lot of this forum, I read some posts about the LS engine being blown, and some people are trying to stay away from it. Is this a myth or is there some truth behind it. I'm going to put a lot of trust into the members here because I really don't have experience with these motors so I couldn't really say which is better. SO based on what you guys are telling me is what I'm going to decide and so far it's the b18b from what I have read.

The reason I don't want to boost my D-series engine is because it's already got over 200k on it! Seriously .... and it's begining to burn quite a lot of oil, so the engine swap would do a lot of good for me.

Now as far as the engines go, I was hoping to push atleast 170hp, and since the B18b has 140 I was wondering if this is the best engine to chose when it comes to the mods that are out there which will increase HP the best

Well, the B18B is cheaper, easier to find and lower maintenance, and uses less gas too on average. In the 1/4 mile, the B16A will have a distinct advantage. But the B18B will feel more useful around town. The B16A will feel no different than your engine now until you get past 4500 rpm or so when it really starts to breathe, and then VTEC kicks in and you get the rest of the power. I'd be interested in buying your tired old motor when you get around to doing the swap.

You know what bbarbulo your a good advisor! That last post did it for me. I am definetly going with the B18B due to fuel consumption, ease of installion and price. Also I didn't want to keep my old engine so I'd be happy to sell it to you. did you want the whole setup like ECU, tranny, etc? I think one of the members here is selling his b18b with GSR tranny for $2000 but I'm not sure if it's that great of a deal... Maybe saving like $500 but I believe he did say he put in a new cluth and lightened fly feel. Can't remember his name now. But anyone seen the engine he's selling?

I think your talking about Sassafrass? He had it in a eg previously, but the engine was pulled from a 99 I think. johnlo also has a b18b with a gs-r tranny in his ek h/b. Personnaly I think it's a great engine to use for a commuter car.
