Strange Strange Civic

Alright

Car: Civic Si 1997

So I go to start my car, put the key in, clutch down and turn... car starts but it sounds strange a bit. Almost a low grinding noise.

I let go of the clutch (while in neutral) and the parking brake comes on. The parking brake is down.

I push the clutch peddle in again, and i near a brutal grinding noise, almost like the sound you get you you try to start the car when its already running.

I turn the car off and back on and the problem goes away. This has happened 4 times over the last 2 months....

any ideas?

clutch bearings?

sounds like your header is overheating. I suggest to buy a fan to blow on your header.

Thats my first guess, other than that, i'd check the levels on your pwoer steering, clutch fluid and washer fluid.

but it happens when the car has been sitting cold.... its only after I start it the second time its perfectly fine

the clutch and parking brake are two independant systems from one another. It sounds like a electrical problem. check the switch under the armrest and clean the contacts, other wise it might be grounding somewhere. As for the noise most likely a tranny issue. Maybe a clutch, could be bearings or anything. Also check your main relay. Sometimes a relay could make a loud buzzing noise if theres a wiring issue.

its your throwout bearing, replace it with a full clutch kit.

And check your brake fluid.

And btw dont bother checking your main relay.. Your relay is not going to grind when you push the clutch in.

throw out bearing eh... damn....

just out of curiousity why does it do it so rarely, and why after I turn it off and on does the problem go away?

whats the relation with the hand brake light?

wait..

so if its making the noise. You shut the car off.. start it back up again, the noise is gone?

yes the noise is gone, the parking brake light is working like normal.. car drives fine

i hate when problems are so intermittent like that, i would say its the release bearing, and the spring that holds it in place is broken or missing, as for the parking brake light.....yup

fingolfin 21-Aug-2007 12:14 PM

lol.. that what I was thinking too.. but the parking light and the non-consistancy of this is strange...

i plan to do the clutch next summer, so if i can find a cheapo trans, maybe ill just change the entire unit
