Strange Problem(long discription)
 

This weekend I replaced my timing belt/waterpump and all other belts. Since I forgot to pickup some coolant I just used some water temporarily. Now the problem : when am stopped at a light and then go to take off the car seems to have no power in 1st/2nd between idle and 3k rpm. I can floor the pedal and I can hear the engine getting louder but the rpm would go up very slowly, but as soon as it gets to 3k range it shoots up to 6k without problems. Also, when I turn on the AC the car would have no power what so ever unless I get into the 5k rpm range.

Car is 2k Si Coupe, D16Y8

did you check your timing? it sounds off

i hope to god you put anti-freeze in there after and haven't been driving around with just water.

Timing is probably off.

just a Question, whats wrong with putting just water over the summer, it's not going to freeze

well I didnt have any time since I had plans that afternoon. So whats the best way of bleeding out the water? Just open the valve at the bottem of th rad and let it bleed out and refill with premix fluid?

it raises the boiling temperature of your coolant, so essentially your water could boil and turn into stem in your cooling system and overheat your engine. I've seen it happen to three motors.

I had no idea, I was always told that water itself has better thermal transfer then coolant, so I thought coolant was only to keep it from freezing, I guess boiling and lubing too =p

ya.. you better put some anti freeze in there asap. I wouldnt even drive it with just water.

don't completely drain all the water out, just drain half out, then top it up with coolant.

Well im thinking of just draining out the rad and topping that up with antifreeze/coolant, the water thats already in the system should be good to mix with that.

yup, that should be good.

water does have better cooling properties than a coolant mix...BUT it doesnt lubtricate the water pump and if your forget that you're rockin water when it gets cold and freezes on you you're in a heap of trouble

Quick Update.

For the past couple of days the car seemed fine, accelrated fine and without any hesitation. Since I didn't adjust the timing yet im thinking that it's the fuel filter. On some days it runs fine and on others, like today, the car has no power in the low revs up until 3k then it starts to pickup. I purchased this car about a year ago and never changed the fuel filter.


This all started to happen after I changed my timing belt, AC belt, PS Belt and Alt Belt. I did remove the dizzy to check the disk when I changed the timing belt. If the timing it off, could it on some days run without power loss and on others run like complete ass?



One last thing, my car sounds electric now :P is that caused by the timing belt being too tight?

^ probably, when its too tight you here a nice sound that makes it sound like one of those whined up cars when you were a kid!

Did u spin the tensioner pulley when u had the belt off..... a timing belt that is too tight usually makes a whirley sound (hard to type and describe)

Stop condeming a fuel filter for all driveablitly problems (this goes to everybody on this site) Ive been a liscenced mechanic for years and ive only ever seen 1 fuel filter cause an actual driveability problem and that was the whole filter element had come loose internally and blocked the passage. Now im not saying it wouldnt be a good idea to change it, but dont think OH my car is running like ****, must be a clogged fuel filter... A car with no power under 3000 after you did a timing belt. CHECK YOUR DAMN MARKS it not hard.... If its off move it.... as for the dizzy... did you set ignition timing afterwards.... these are all thing to consider. Id be happy to look at it for a small fee

****, my mistake. I didn't check the pulley. What a ***** of a job it is just to remove the damn cover :P Thanks everyone for the info, I will take it to someone who knows wth they are doing :P As for the fuel filter, I did end up changing it and it was clogged.

Hi, lots of racecars (racetracks) use 100% water....no antifreeze.

Running all water will not overheat your engine. Water rocks! :thumbup:




But ya coolant is good for it's lubrication :thumbup: and if you run all water don't forget to change it before it gets cold outside :cry:
