strange noise ... help?
 

hmmm... this is going to be tricky to describe...

for a '99 civic si

alright... i first noticed the noise when i was coming to a stop ... as i stopped (in a straight line) and the suspension settled i noticed a kinda of a click/clunking sound...

...the sound is from the driver side front ...

i can also hear it if the car is off and i wiggle the steering wheel back and forth... no sound when turning while driving...

...is something loose? i recently had an h-brace installed in the front... also have coilovers...

could it be the ball joint already?

..any insight would be great...

brakes are worn

tie rods or ball joint... ball joint more than likely since you say it clunks going straight and braking. Go outside and try to shake your tire by the top of it... this should reproduce the noise or at least you will see if it shakes... get this fixed RIGHT away... or at least ASAP. If you can't afford ball joints from Honda, buy Moog ones... they are the best aftermarket replacement ball joints.

cosmic... that's an interesting take... it COULD be brakes, but I don't see why shaking the steering wheel then stopped would create this noise.

i just assumed he's sitting in the car... one foot on the brake....wiggling the wheel :wink:

If it is a minor click(clickety click, click), and Honda reveals that it is not tire rods or ball joint, then it is useless.

I have 98si, my friend has 99si and we both have that clicking noise. checked joints, Honda said nope. replaced brakes, nope. checked transmission links, nope.

it comes and goes.

checked 3 honda dealers, they said there was nothing wrong with axles, joints, bearings, etc.

IF you try everything, and the sound doesn't go away, i wouldn't worry, it's been 200,000km for me and 306,000km for my friend and we are running fine. BUT check it out first I could be wrong for your car.

i had it checked last night and my mechanic could not find anything wrong with it... he checked the axles, joints, and bearings and said that if they were worn you would hear more than just a click when coming to a stop... you would hear noises as you drove as well...

...i thought it might be the brakes and someone else had suggested this as well... i will probably change the brakes this summer... hopefully its just that...

...or hopefully its nothing at all...

I had a similar problem with my old Civic as well as on my EL. The problem for me was that the brakes required lubrication. I went through the same process of getting tie rods, bearings, etc. checked out and all were fine. Lubricate the front brakes and the noise was gone. Not sure if you have the same problem, but just something to consider.

nah, I just drive alot. my friend however, even with it being newer(99'), is a COURIER. tsk tsk tsk.
