stock shocks lasting

How long will stock shocks last on coilovers at a 2.25" drop?

BOND007 15-Jul-2003 02:58 PM

I would say from about 1-3 months if your lucky .....:(

punkindrublic 15-Jul-2003 03:10 PM

talk to eg4door about that... he's had his springs on for a while now with stock shocks...

my buddy had his 90 civic slammed on stock shocks that lasted a solid 9-10 month before getting bouncy

bbarbulo 15-Jul-2003 03:23 PM

Mine lasted 3.5 years and are STILL good (I replaced them out of want rather than need), I also had proper rates for that shock, and I drive like your grandmomma is in the back seat sippin on some sizzup :D

BOND007 15-Jul-2003 03:27 PM

2.25 DROP ON USED STOCK STRUTS WOULD BE PRETTY TOUGH ON THE STRUT THOUGH

imported_Joker 15-Jul-2003 03:53 PM

well around 2" not quite 2.25"

imported_EG4door 15-Jul-2003 03:55 PM

Ya its been like 2 years now, but I'm sure I'm going to have to replace my shocks soon.

StewPiddass 15-Jul-2003 05:58 PM

I have stock front shocks (original from manufacture in '92) on my car with H&R Race Springs (2.25" drop). The springs have been in for at least 6 years. And I autocross almost every week-end. To tell you the truth the rear Tokiko Blues (about 6 years old too) are in worse shape than the fronts.

Hoping for Koni Yellows this winter.

imported_gatherer 15-Jul-2003 06:46 PM

hoping for Koni's eh ???

get agx's they are better IMO

punkindrublic 15-Jul-2003 07:17 PM

cheaper to aren't they?

dingus8 16-Jul-2003 01:24 AM

koni's are better than agx's...and it isnt' a matter of how long they will "last"...your car is underdampened your shocks cannot handle the higher spring rate of the spring so your actually hurting performance...I hate it when peoepl do this it is retarded what is the ******* point it isnt' just the spring that helps perfomance it's more the shock and controls the movement of the spring. You peoepl will never knwo what a good suspension under you feels like...I have raced mx bikes so I knwo way to much about suspension. I know how to recognise whether in needs more low speed or highspeed dampening or rebound blah blah blah....get shocks to go with the springs...and remember the lower you go the less suspension travel you have so 2 inches is probobly bad....race springs are bullshit you have no suspension travel....just remember people when someone calls you a rice boy and you get pissed and think your car is a "Race car" think of what suspension you have and you probobly are because your preception on things is retarded...get knowledge take it in use it and do things right not half ass, so you can drive around with dignity and know how to help other people out. It blows my mind because in motocross peoepl know so much about suspension and they care about it then you get car guy's that ask if they half ass something will it owrk good...the answer is NO. I was a total noob at one point but I took the time to learn reading for hours and hours and researchign anything and everythign I coudl think of..take pride in what you have...if you dont' have enough money to do somethign right dotn' do it keep things in perspective if you can't afford to buy a correct suspeniosn setup then save up or spend money on other more improtant things liek a hair cut food or new underpants without skid marks....I said goodday

imported_EG4door 16-Jul-2003 06:44 PM

Well if I had money to blow I would have bought a set of full-coilover suspension. I still believe that most springs out there does help the car go through corners better. Not the best, but better than stock in most cases. Even I can tell my car cornered better than stock.

StewPiddass 16-Jul-2003 06:54 PM

Come on out to the next auto-x and we'll see if my crappy "Race" springs and stock shocks can beat you... I realize I don't have the optimum set-up, I do want new shocks, and hopefully will get some this winter, but, I was just posting to say that mine still work fine in under the above-mentioned conditions. I can't pour all my $ into my car (as much as I'd like to) because when you grow up and move out of mommie's house there are other things like a mortgage and bills to concentrate on.

imported_BoOsTd 16-Jul-2003 06:59 PM

stiff low springs without good shocks is not only bad for your tires, but its almost dangerous to drive under normal road conditions, like regular street driving...Im sure its fine for auto x since the tracks would be fairly smoot no? ...IMO with my experiance with stock shocks and lowered springs on a daily driver ,stick with stock springs unless you can afford good struts/shocks to compliment them...And KYB doesnt even compare to koni, not even Tokico...KYB's are bottem line performance struts...

im sure you know your suspension, but you dont have to be a dick about it.

with that said not everyone cares enough about certain aspects of their car to spend a wad load of moola on it, but rather have a well rounded package.

imported_Joker 17-Jul-2003 12:02 PM

How mwould I tell if my shocks are blown and/or the coilover has come out of its place?

Boostzex: when did lowering springs with stock shocks became dangerous when driving on normal road conditions? I've been riding on Skunk 2 coilovers with stock shocks for about 2 years and never had a problem, sure the the ride may be a bit harsh, but it never affected the safety of my car.

punkindrublic 17-Jul-2003 01:57 PM

some people like the bouncy ride.... i saw this kid on my way to school yesterday in a golf... lowered to about an inch... maybe 1.5" max from the road... this was on dundas st near mississauga rd... and the kid was in his seat jumping like 2-3" in his seat just going over normal bumps in the rd...

imported_Joker 17-Jul-2003 03:47 PM

how will i tell if the stock shocks are blown?

LOL:p My buddy had an old caddy in highschool, all the struts were blowen; as he would approch stoplights he would tap the brakes and the Caddy would start bouncing like a mofo, it was hilarious, everyone thought he had air ride...This was back in the day when airide in a car was never seen, but just heard of...

And EG4door struts become dangerous when the shocks can no longer hold a constant tire to road contact...You will know what I mean when you go through a bumpy corner a bit to fast and the car skips and skids straight through it...good struts eliminates the problem almost compleatly, of course there are limitations to how big of a bump you hit... A good strut/spring combo should flow with every contour in the road, and never let the tire leave it, they will also reduce your chances of avoiding an accident, due to the poor responsiveness.

Characteristics of worn or weak shocks:
-Excessive rebound or “float”:bounce:
-Wander or poor tracking
-Poor steering response
-Too much body wallow or lean during lane change or cornering
-Corner to corner pitch (corkscrewing motion) during cornering
-Excessive dive under braking
-instability during braking
-Excessive brake lock-up
-ABS engages too quickly and too often
-Poor adhesion on rough surfaces (i.e. crossing;railroad tracks)
-Frequent bottoming
-Harsh ride quality

All these things make poor shocks dangerous...And afterall its your investment your protecting right? Just like those Ricers that run around a hundred miles an hour with thousands of dollers in mods, but are running on 150 thousand kilometer old brake parts:shrugs:
