stiff clutch

stiff clutch
I have had a stiff clutch on my 89 hatch ever since I have owned it, it never really bothered me much, but now that I am commuting to Richmond hill, it's starting to suck (rather I am knowticing it more). I have already replaced the cable, made no difference, I am wondering if it could be the clutch itself, I haven't touched it since I have had the car, I was wondering if there could be something wrong with it (or its a cheap aftermarket) could something like that cause a stiff clutch? Because I don't think the clutch is worn out (doesn't slip, works fine) so I would prefer not to have to go to the trouble of replacing it?
is there anything else I should check?, anyone got any ideas?..thanks
