Stick shift

For a car with manual transmission, is the stick shift suppose to be "loose" when in gear??

I've noticed that when I'm in 1st, 3rd and 4th the "stick" feels loose where I can move it from side to side. But in 2nd, it's pretty solid.

If this is not normal, what could be the problem?

Do the bushings serve any purpose?
Sometimes I have trouble getting into the gears.

The white colour bushing is the bushing that goes around the shifter pivot ball, over time, the lithium/silicon grease depleted and you need more. There is also another bushing at the end of the shift rod, if that bushing goes bad, your shifter will tend to be loose from side to side.

Now, your shifter will always move from side to side no matter what, but when in gear, or driving, if it moves on its own due to car’s vibration, then that is a sign of it being not good anymore. Otherwise, it is not that big of a deal.

To change, it is not that hard. A few nuts and bolts can get the shifter out. You might need to grease the ball bushing a little.

If you can shift into a gear, that might be something else.

Thanks for the detailed info. So this movement does not "harm" the car in any way right?

If I decide to, is there an aftermaket "kit"/bushing that I can buy to replace it or is OEM better?

Is there a technical term for this so when/if I go to a shop they know what I'm talking about?

Your answers can be found here...

The poster had the same problems you are describing. There is a rebuild kit available from the dealer. It combined with some aftermarket urethane bushings will greatly improve your shifter feel.
