drove my girlfriend's 99 Civic...i noticed on the highway that when i was at a cruising speed, say 100-120, and then had to brake due to upcoming traffic, the steering wheel would begin to shake a little...i also noticed that at slightly higher cruising speeds it would shake a bit too (not as much though)...does anyone know what could cause this? could it need an alignment? or is it possibly the brakes? it's not extremely severe and isn't noticeable at slower speeds, so i'm not sure if it's the brakes or not....any ideas???

if the shake happen at a specific range of speed, say only from 110- 120 and no shake whatsoever below or above that, then usually it's the balance of the wheels.

and if it shake when you brake, do you feel the brake pedal pulsating also? if you do, then the brake rotor is warp. but you say it's your gf's car so unless she likes to brake late and hard, rotor warpage is rare.

so test the car at the speed the car start to shake again, and try going above and below and see if you notice any vibration.

I would have an alignment done and then machine the rotors and replace the pads..

Bang, no more problem (hopefully).

If you REALLY wanna have fun with her, tell her that you can't find anything wrong with her car, and that its all in her head.
