starting problems... tune up done, not much diff... ???

i have a b18c1 in my ek and for a while its had a funny starting problem with it. i will turn the key, it will crank and then when the engine fires up, its like it fires up on only 2 cylinders or something and barely starts... if i am lucky, i can leave it and it will kick in after a few seconds... you can watch the revs slowly climb... like, it will start messed up, sit somewhere like 200rpm, then climb, 500, 700, 1100, 1300, 1500, 1700, 1500... pretty much just like that when its cold, but even when its hot its the same, just doesn't idle as high...

and after starting it and it sits for a few mins, seems like its idling around 800, then it will just dip and sit at like 600 or something and rest there...

yesterday, i replaced the distributor (filled with red dust), put new oem plug wires and spark plugs... i know it needed a tune-up bad, but i figures it would solve the problem...

i am out of ideas... can someone please help?

sounds like a problem with the fast idle thermo valve on the throttle body. Try taking it apart and screwing in/out the little plastic peice that threads into the body of the valve.
You could also try cleaning out the idle air control valve on the back of the intake manifold, i've personally never had sucess with that, but i know some people on here have, for me, replacing the iacv has been the only solution to a faulty one....but your situation doesn't seem to be an iacv problem to me.
I would also check all of your grounds and check for a vacuum leak.

well, i guess those are two good ones to check out. funny, it only happened that day (***knock on wood***) like right after i did the tune-up... so, maybe stuff needed to work in, i don't know... but i haven't had the problem yet... that's why i was feeling to go to cayuga on the weekend...

what should a gsr idle at, if anyone knows off hand? my tach, seems to be at 750 most of the time i think... when i start it up it looks to be around 800-850, but after sitting for a couple minutes you feel it just drop to like the 750 range... is this normal for when you start as well?

well stock tachs are horribly innacurate. But it should idle anywhere between 700-900rpms. If its idling too low try adjusting the idle screw on the throttle body.

is there any advantage to moving it around? say higher?

also, i know you mentioned to me before the IACV possibly being the culprit to my problems... almost every time i stopped from driving say slowing down in 2nd, then i put my foot on the clutch and the revs drop.. it always seemed to stop, then dip like maybe 50rpm or not even... since i changed the dizzy/plugs/wires, it doesn't seem to be as consisitent any longer, but still happens here and there... could this be the IACV??? or anything else?

i am also running a 2.5" straight pipe with a test pipe... could this be back pressure related?

i doubt it, i've been using full throttle launch, full throttle shift for some time now in my car with no problems.
It could however be the chip, if your fuel/ignition values are off at idle it can cause a hunting/crappy/low idle for sure.

maybe this weekend if you are available sometime i could grab a chip off of you then.

is it possible for you to chip it to read boost? i have this turbo sitting at the end of my bed, but i can't just put it on yet because my ecu won't read it. I just need it to work so i can drive it wherever and get it tuned.
