Squeaking from front wheel? What is it?

Hey guys....last night I drove through a pot hole on the highway and now I got this squeaking noise coming from the passenger front wheel. The wheel that went through the pot hole. I hear the noise the most when turning left and a little bit when passing over bumps slowly, but nothing when going straight on smooth roads at high speed. Any suggestion on what it might be? I jacked up the car but everything seems fine. Could it be the shock?

might be the drive shaft/cv joint?
was it a really big/deep pothole?

Does the noise get faster and slower as the car gets faster and slower?

Does the noise go away when you touch the brake?

it was dark so I didn't really see the pothole but I sure heard it.... sounded pretty deep. The noise seems pretty constant ... no matter what speed....

have you taken off the wheel? had a look at the suspension....?

what about the rim is it bent?

imported_Torrey 02-Sep-2003 10:44 AM

over bumps? Could be a lot of things,,,, try bringing it to a mechanic to take a look at it.

I have a similar sound when making a right turn, although my CV Boot is ripped, hence the noise.

It'll go under the knife tomorrow.

I took a look at everything under the car and it seemed fine... I think next I'm gonna take off the drive shaft and check the bearing..... anything else I should check?

Rim was fine

well if you have it apart and the ball joints disconnected if you push the side with the bolt sticking out around it should stay where you put it or slowly (I mean very slowly) move back to straight down ....

if it moves around easily and doesn't stay where you put it you might want to consider replacing....

imported_majikstic 02-Sep-2003 11:28 PM

gatherer..... I'm assuming you mean the transmission side right?

I did that and it does stay where I put it.... I don't know what else it could be..... I think I'm gonna try to remove the boot on the wheel side and check out the bearings to see if anything is wrong.... anything else I can do?

thanks

no the ball joints are the upper and lower ball joints.... 2 per side...

the lower ball joint is the bolt you undo to remove the lower contorl arm at the knuckle and the upper ball joint is where the upper A arm connects to that arm that comes up from the knuckle those are ball joints if the top onme or the bottom one break you wheel will be flat on the ground... and you won't be going anywhere

imported_majikstic 03-Sep-2003 12:41 AM

sorry.... misunderstood your message.

I checked out the lower ball joint.... there is a tear in the boot. I might have done this when I removed the lower control arm. Do I need to replace this now?

I checked to see if it stayed in place when I moved it. It moved quickly to a certain point. Stopped at a lower position but not straight down. Is this ok?

I just had the same problem, Cut ball joint boot.

The llonger you postpone it the more you flirt with danger.

Dirts getting in there and the grease is leaking out, it's only a matter of time before that ball joint fails.

If you're driving in rain it'll excel the wear, in winter with sluch and salt?.... goodbye loose wheel...
