Spinning belt noise help

Hey guys,
I am getting this spinning belt noise from my b16a2. I think it is the belts because it comes from the driver side and from listening, it doesn't sound like it's coming from the alternator end, it sounds more like it is from the PS, AC part. The noise is there when idling and when driving.

please gimmie some ideas about what it could be before i go to the mechanics and believe everything they tell me

thanks

your belts are worn out most likely.. or just real dry.

Is it kinda like a squeeling sometimes? is it a loud "spinning" noise?

edit: whens the last time you changed them?

rjngo 10-Mar-2006 01:27 PM

your ac is starting to fall apart...

kaichun5586 10-Mar-2006 01:32 PM

yeah, it is pretty loud. kinda like squealing...but with a more patterned rotational kinda sound to it.

is it my AC? my AC is not working by the way, i thought it just needed a recharge...the fan turns but just no cold air comes out.

belt change? i think those are still the original belts, if that, there's 80,000km on the belts.

chris_si98 10-Mar-2006 01:34 PM

80,000km? your timing belt will be due in 10,000km.

it's definately your belt(s)

If your ac isn't working it may just need a re-fill.

kaichun5586 10-Mar-2006 01:45 PM

do u mean 100,000km? for the belt
i was thinking recharge for the AC as well.

rgnjo, why do u think it is my AC?

chris_si98 10-Mar-2006 01:49 PM

maybe it is 100K for honda's. Maybe I'm thinking of GM or something.

Remove each belt at a time and isolate which one is making the noise, olbiviously you can't do timing belt but I hope you get the picture.

sorry for the late reply...i just think its the ac motor, not sure but this is what i feel...

kaichun5586 10-Mar-2006 09:42 PM

alright, i am gonna take off both PS belt and AC belt to see which one is making the noise.

for PS belt, u just release the tension on it and the belt should come right off, right? So my plan of attack is this:

1. take off PS belt
2. turn on engine to listen if noise is still there
if it is still there:
3. take off AC belt (not putting the PS belt back, cuz in order to take off AC belt, u need the PS belt off, says my Helms manual.)
4. turn on engine and listen again.

Sounds good? don't wanna mess up my car more.

if it's not the belts...then i guess i will check my AC compressor...

kaichun5586 10-Mar-2006 09:44 PM

i just went to look at my car again. there's this string looking belt that sits right beside my AC belt...i can't find it in Helms, what is it?

chris_si98 10-Mar-2006 09:47 PM

there's a tensioner on the pass. side of the bracket.. it's a 14mm if i remember correctly. make sure when you put them back on to clean the pulleys off well (that could lead to some noise) and to check the tension of the actual belt.

huh??

is it a driving belt? your p/s is located right above your compressor.. is that what you mean?

kaichun5586 10-Mar-2006 09:55 PM

no, there's actually a very stringy belt-like string thingy that is RIGHT BESIDE my AC belt...i am puzzled as well

Alternator

kaichun5586 11-Mar-2006 08:07 PM

no, alternator belt is towards the firewall and its not stringy. The one i am talking about seems to run thru the same pulleys as my AC belt and it's not on very tight. I really gotta take a pic of this thing and maybe someone can tell me what it is.

chris_si98 11-Mar-2006 08:45 PM

yeah take a pic of it. That's very odd..

Cynikal.Mindset 12-Mar-2006 05:14 PM

...u sure it not a piece of your old worn out belt?

I gotta see a pic of this

kaichun5586 12-Mar-2006 06:28 PM

Alright, I just finished fixing it. I think the problem is solved, cuz I don't hear it anymore.

Here's the pic of that stringy belt (red arrow)

http://www.uoguelph.ca/~kaichun/images/belt

it's got its own groove on the pulleys so i don't think it is a piece of my old worn out belt.

The problem was the tension adjusting screw for the AC belt was all the way out (green arrow) so the belt was loose. I just adjusted it so that the belt sits snug.

i hope i fixed it....

alright, i gotta go clean that PS steering fluid that's all over my driveway now

rjngo 12-Mar-2006 06:45 PM

good job!!! you fixed it:p
anyway, that string is weird - i haven't seen one like that. i thought it was a broken belt
