Sound of shattered glass, comming from the engine!

Hi.

I have a few problems with my newly installed B16A2.

1st off all, when I rev it pass 3500, the valves start to sound like shattered glass, being shaken insaide a can. Do I need a valve adjustment for this? (Engine however, pulls nice and strong)

2nd problem: Idle is very un-even. It keeps going back and forth between 1000 and 1500 rmp, when the car is stopped.

3rd, when VTEC engages at 5200 (Spoon program), I feel no increase in power at all. Just a loud *** sound, that gives you a f*cking headache!

Any tips with these problems are greatly apprecited.

Faraz.

you sure its coming from your valves?

i had the same glass sound from my d16y8 but it only happened when the engine was cold around 2500-3000 rpm. It was coming from under the car though, sounded like a loose bolt.

Why are you having vtec engaged at 5200rpm on a stock motor?

That's just asking for trouble.

on the same note, why you running a spoon program (most likely one of those eBay ones) on a fairly stock motor I assume.

The shattered glass sound is there, no matter if the engine is cold or hot. And The Spoon chip came with the P28 OBD1 ECU that I got for my swap. I also have a mugen chip that came with it, so I figured Spoon is less stress...
I bought the P28 and chips from Matt. N1_taboo. I PMed him, asking if he has a chip with STOCK B16A2 program. Hopefully he does...

And no, no CEL are present...

When id VTEC supposed to engage in a stock programed B16?

Thanks.

stock i believe is 5500rpm. With most "spoon" or "mugen" copy chipped ecu's vtec crossover is lowered to 5200 which is kinda pointless. I mean honda set it where they did obviously for a reason. Now if you are like me and have different cams in, then your x-over may be set higher or lower. Mine is set at 5200, but we figured out when it should crossover on the dyno.
When i first got my swap done, they chipped the p28 with a "beefed up" b16 program (riiiight) and had the vtec x-over set at 4800!!! Why? I am not sure, he said it was for more power....ha, yeah right.
When i got my vafc2, i changed the x-over to 5500 and it was WAY better. Before (with vtec set at 4800) when it crossed over it was really slow until about 5500. After i changed it to 5500 vtec crossed over smoothly and it actually pulled as soon as it crossed over.
Another thing about "chips", most (unless a custom chip) just dump way too much fuel (both at narrow throttle and wide throttle) and advance the timing so it feels faster, but its not really, its just moving the power band lower in the rpms and taking away from the top end.
Your best bet is to get an obd1 p30, but with this ecu you WILL need to wire in the knock sensor, otherwise vtec won't crossover at all.

faraz:

does the sound happen when driving only, or if you rev it in the driveway is the glass sound still very audible?

if so have you got someone to take a good listen to what part of the engine its coming from

Gatsby - First thing you need is a valve adjustment. If that doesn't fix the noise and idling issue - i'd suggest getting a compression test done - worst case scenario would be a damaged or broken valve.
If you're still having issues and the compression test is fine - i'd try changing out the chip on the ECU for a stock program.

If you need help with any of this - shoot me a PM.

I went where i went for the install b/c like you said no time. I work full-time 3 shifts and weekends and need a car to get to work, and figured i would leave it to professionals. I definately SHOULD have done it myself, would have got it done a lot faster, and would have been done right.
What do you mean still talkin trash? I simply told Gatsby my experience with chips. I've been to the dyno to see how exactly it made my car run, which was pretty rich i might add, so i tuned it properly with a vafc.
If everybody knows it only takes a weekend to do a swap, which i agree with, how come it took that shop a week to do it? And how come a shop would cut corners, like chipping an ecu to get around having to wire in a broken knock sensor, or using the wrong rear mount or using a busted evap purge solenoid?
Enough about that shop and the quality of work they do, i only brought them up b/c he was asking a question about chipped ecu's.
It is old, i agree, and its not like i started up a thread to trash that shop. I am sure there are people who have had good experiences with them, but i am not one of them.

Nicole ? You are a girl ?

Man, why post something that has nothing to do with the thread. Andrew is a great guy and helps out anyone that has problems. I'm almost positive if there was a percentage rate where he posts, well over 50% of it would be in the performance section.

Keep your comments to yourself next time ! You saying you haven't been on this forum for months might be good because when you come on, your the one talkin trash.

all we ask for is peace and respect for other members on the boards.. he never made a personal attack at yourself, so you don't need to try and start something..

we all have opionions about things, you can't change that, he may have had a bad experience, it happens, best thing is to drop it and get on with your life.. if the shop is a good place, it will show and lots of people will come, if the shop sucks it will show as well.

i was never complaining about the ecu you got for me. I was simply saying that most chips, unless custom burnt and most people (on here at least) don't have a custom program that was dyno tuned for their application...ie uberdata, chrome, etc, are pretty crappy and dump too much fuel and advance the timing too much.
Wanna bet warped rotors can cause a vibration while driving. Come for a ride in my car Nicole, which has come a long way since you've last seen it, it vibrates like a cheap *****, then we will change out my rotors (which i know for a fact are beyond the minimum machining thickness b/c i machined them myself last spring, so i know they are warped) and pads and we will see if the vibration is gone.
Just because i have more money than motivation sometimes and am willing to pay a shop to do a swap from me doesn't mean i don't know anything.
Nicole, you are one of the car cooler girls i've spoken with. And i have no beef with the ecu you gave me. I agree there is a lot of misinformed people posting stuff on these boards. But i posted trying to help this guy, from the experience i have with chipped ecu's, not personally attacking you or your b/f.
