Sound in Intake
 

Sometimes when I drive, I hear Civics that has a low vooming sound when they pass by me, and they only have a stock exhaust on their car.

Is this sound generated by a SRI or CAI?

Could also be a header. A header (even with stock exhaust) makes a car sound nice. The wife's car has a SRI and header (stock exhaust) and i swear it sounds nicer than my car....hehe

Most likely intake. Even my parents who are 50 have an intake on there Civic tend to get better gas milage if you drive normally with an intake.

is it expensive to replace your header with an aftermarket one, ive seen them really cheap on ebay, but are they expensive to have them installed by a mechanic? or is it a quick swap?

Install at a shop should be $50-$70. It's not that difficult.. I'm sure somebody on the boards would do it for you for $20 or a case of beer

it only takes about an hour, if the o2 sensor comes out easily, but go to midas and get a new donut gasket and spring kit with new bolts in case yours are rusted and brake.

cheap headers are a complete waste of your money.

I couldn't agree more. Cheap parts in general are a waste of money. You get what you pay for.

how much should i spend on a header?

it depends. What are your goals?
If you just think that you will probably only ever just get an intake, header, exhaust, intake manifold and throttle body, pretty much just bolt-on's i would say spend no more than $500 on a new one.
But if you plan on doing extensive modifications to the engine then upwards of $1000-1500 for a good custom made stainless piece.

zeeman expain to me why those headers are better than typical aftermarket ones or even dc headers.

Those look longer than most other headers, how do that help?

get a ceramic coated header, dont get just painted if you plan on buying one

well with a custom header you get just that....a custom header. Its designed with the specifications of your engine setup to produce the most power. Primary length and diameter, collector size and placement, 4-1 or 4-2-1, these are all things that effect how a header will perform and things that are considered when designing a custom header.
Sure an off the shelf, production header will give you gains, but nothing like a one of a kind custom header for your application.
Then again, its all about how much you plan on modding. If you aren't trying to squeeze every whp out of your engine just a regular, off the shelf header, like most people use, will do you fine.
But if you got the cash to spend on a hand made custom header then go for it. But keep in mind things like ground clearance, weld quality (which is usually very very high) and what type of material is being used.

dont be fooled by exhausts that dont have big chrome tips... there are lots of ppl out there with nice big exhaust systems with a stock looking muffler...

I do agree you get what you pay for but you should check out the Megan Racing SS headers. For price-to-performance ratio, these are hard to beat, AND they give you a lil more power than stock.

If you port and polish to fit the headers, you will gain even more.

When my Ractive headers either get old and rusty, I will be getting the Megan Racing ones. They are comparable to the DC Sports ones for more than half the price.

could anyone install a dc 4-2-1 header in my 91 hatch for a case of beer please pm me if u can...

i went by teknotik to check out there Megan 4-1 Stainless, it looked good, has the 2.5 collecter, o2 sensor hole. and it was somewhere in the 300 range. zeeman is this a good header for just a bolton type of civic, i have i/e i just looking for a header now, then maybe im and tb, is anyone running this header?

will the 99-00 SIR header give any extra ummmph.. sound/power wise? over a regular dx haeader
