sleeve coilover question

hey guys, need some help here.
a set of sleeve coilovers have two diff spring rates.
do the beefier springs (ie higher spring rates) go up front or in the back?
thanks!

depends whether you ask me or your ask PULOVR...

ok my opinion ... like most HONDA autocrossers stiffer to the rear ..get that rear end rotating....

PULOVR would say stiffer in the front due to heavier engine...

(at least thats what he said last time we had this discussion at automotive warehouse)

anyways if you look at both spring rates you see even the lower of the 2 is stiffer then stock honda springs and therefore the engine weight argument doesn't work.

in the end if you want track like easy to get the rear end out, go stiff in the rear ... of course if you want daily driver easy to control go with stiff up front just like honda did when they designed the cars.. of course honda engineers believed that understeer is easier for the average person to control

another way to look at it... using my springs and car (5th gen hatch) as an example

the spring rates for my springs are 495 front and 385 rear... but if you consider that the front end of the car is carrying signifigantly more weight.... so even though the rear springs have a lower spring rate... they have less weight on them.... which effectively makes them feel more stiff then the front springs.... which is the goal for autocross....

but to answer the initial question.... you can't install the rear springs on the front or vise versa....

On a set of coilovers you can. The springs are different rates, but the same diameter.

really? i wasn't aware of that.... my springs i know you can't install opposite... but i also have zer oexperiance with coil overs... gatherers post from earlier now makes more sense :richslap:

The only diff is that two of the springs are a bit taller....or shorter......depending on how you look at them. :p

ie....(notice how they are the same diameter, but a little different in height?)

Ok... I get a little worred when ppl start talking about MacPhearson struts and coilover sleeves :p

imported_SedanBoy 26-Aug-2003 12:23 PM

heehee... agreed..... i took one look at a coilover sleeve for my fronts and decided springs were the way to go... heehee....
