Significant Oil Consumption, but good compression?

A friend's B16 is showing Dry test compression numbers of around

220 - 222 - 224 - 220

However, he says burns like 3 - 4 quarts of oil every 1000-1500 Kms. He says, that regardless of how he drives, either babying the car or driving it hard, the consumption does not vary much. He also does not notice any blue smoke out the back.

I have not seen the car yet and probably won't till sometime mid week. I'll be trying a dry and wet test to see if there is significant variance on the #s, but looking at his dry test, either all the cylinders are screwed or something else is causing the burn.

I'm thinking a faulty PCV valve could be adding to the problem, but would it cause this much burn?

Any feedback is appreciated.

losing that much oil without any blue smoke makes me think it's a leak rather than burning it.

thats what i was gunna say. Check the back of the block, where the tranny attaches (rear main seal could be leaking) and under the timing belt cover (cam seals may be leaking).

im surprised if it is a leak that he hasnt noticed it yet (since it doesnt seem to be a small one). It is probably either the cam seal or rear man like andrew said (ouch)

yeah I'm not exactly sure if he doesn't notice it, means it's not there.. Hard to tell when your driving unless it's sunny outside and your ripping it. At which point, black and blue mix anyway. Only way to tell is to have someone behind the car itself while it's being revved.
