just wondering if this is true. will a cheap no name brand short shifter ruin your sincros in your tranny.

will a B&M correct the problem.

no, the shifter lever will not ruin the synchros, only you may ruin the synchros by shifting too quick, aggresive or imporoperly

a cheaper shifter might simply snap on you one day, probably the biggest downside

ive heard that a stock shifter is less harsh on your tranny than a short shifter.

this is true, by extending the throw, the stock shifter gives the synchros more time to mesh the gears together. short shifters = less time, therefore more abuse on the synchros.

yes it is because with a shortshifter, people tend to shift way too fast and improperly as the throw is alot shorter than the stock shifter. With the stock shifter, even tho you could still shift really quick, but it takes u a little longer to go throw the gears which will let ur gearbox sometime to adjust

i've been using the cheap $25 no-name short shifter my brother gave me in my car for 4 years now with no problem, and believe me its seen some abuse....it was one of the first mods i ever did to my car, and i'd definately put one in my next car. I couldn't imagine spending $100+ on a short shifter.

but a short shifter is still not the culprit of wearing out synchros.
it simply allows you to ram the gear in faster, and that is what you will do.
if you shifted properly with the short shifter, allowing the synchros enough time to match the speed of shafts, it will not wear the synchros any faster

anyways.. the brand of shifter will not affect the wearing of your synchros.. its the ratio of lever lenght on both sides of the fulcrum point combined with the shifting velocity of your hand that dictates it.

absolutely correct ERTW. I've been using a short shifter for over 7 years in my car, with no negative effect on my tranny. however, I granny shift all the time b/c I'm concious of what is going on inside the tranny.

also, just as a general tip, NEVER keep your hand on the shifter. your hand should only be on the shifter with the clutch in and the shifting action is about to take place. keeping your hand on the shifter while in gear transfers any of your hand motion directly into the tranny internals. that's why sometimes you see trannies 'fall' out of gear.

very good point

95% of "drivers" out there have no clue as to what is going on in the car, other than where the fuel and windshield washer fill holes are.

if everyone got to see the innards of engines and transmissions as part of driver training, and saw how the parts interact and what goes on, cars would only need periodic preventative maintenance

to most people a synchro is somethign that other people have break in their cars, they ahve no idea about what it is made of, where it is, how it interacts with the other components and its purpose.... if they saw 2 soft compound disks spinning together at different speeds and shards of material flying off, they would have a tranny last forever.
