short shifter question :S?

short shifter question :S?

hey i just had a short shifter installed....and when i go 2 pop it into reverse....it sounds like it's hitting something....the gear goes in but it makes noise when moving it to the right before putting it in...like its hitting metal...and when the gear is in....when i go 2 reverse...as im reversing...it sounds like it's ratteling on something....what could be the problem????

It's most likely your heatshield, but it might also be the shift linkage hitting your exhaust. I know after installing a shirt shifter my shift linkage hits my exhaust at one point because of some tight clearance.

You can jack your car up, slide underneath, and have someone shift through the gears. Then just look around for what is hitting what. If its the heatshield, you can just take it off. If its the exhaust and shift linkage, you can use a thin layer of header wrap on that area.

thanx alot guys....i heard that short shifters are bad for the tranny...that true?

from what i hear, the short shifter causes damage to the tranny because it doesnt give enough time for the synchros due to the shorter and faster shifts.

But, just dont go berserker and i am sure your tranny will be fine.

at least you didnt have to get all new exhaust so your short shifter had room, i had to replace mine when i installed my short shift because it hung too low. but its all good
