Short Shifter Problems!

Hello, I am very new to the board, and new to the import scene as well, I just picked up a 1999 Si, and I first got a new SPW Short Throw Shifter for the car. I installed it the way i was supposed to, and now, for some reason, the bottom of the shifter is hitting my exhaust underneath the car! Everything is put together properly, I don't knwo what is wrong! if anyone has had this problem, or knows what I did or didn't do, would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Kevin.

I had a similar problem with the Skunk2 shifter in my 98 Si.

Because the new shifter is slightly longer at the bottom, it rubs on the exhaust sometimes. In my case, with my OEM exhaust, the midpipe has a small metal heat shield welded to it just below the shifter. The very bottom of the shifter was rubbing the heat shield.

Solution if you stil have your OEM exhaust...
The heat shield is only held on with 2 very small welds. Take it to a shop and just have them burn the welds off. The heat shield will come off very easily and you're problem wil be solved.

there is an exhaust hanger about a foot back from where your shirter is. get under your car and bend the hanger up, it will drop your exhaust very slightly and eliminate the rubbing

I could take off the heat shield, but wouldn't that mean that the exhaust would get wayy to hot for the bearings inside of the shifter and make it malfunction??

I bent the hangers, and it took a lot of the problems away, but it still hits a bit...

thanks,

kevin

I haven't had any problems with mine at all and it stil shifts perfect. The heat shield is tiny I can't imagine it keeps the temperature that low. I also attempted to lower my exhaust, but with it hanging down, I found that the resonator was bottoming out on speed bumps and when pulling into my driveway.

i dident need 2 bend mine down that far just like 1/4 inch or so and it was fine after that emm mabie u could just flatten the shield down with a hammer so its stil on but its lower mabie that wil give u that extra mm of clearance u need
