short shifter damage to transmission
i was told by a mechanic that short shifters are really hard on the transmission as the shorten time between shifts does not allow the transmission to " get ready" for the next shift. Is this true?
has anyone ever had tranny probs related to short shifters? |
ya totally true, becuause the throw of the shifter is so much quicker the tranny doesnt slow down enough before its in the next gear, they like to munch syncros
|
yep I heard the same thing and I decided to stay away from short shifters unless you got alot of extra $$
|
scott is 100% correct. I have a short shifter, but the thing is I don't boogey on my gears a lot.... it really only makes a huge difference if you're always jammin on your gears at high rpm. I granny shift, so my synchros don't complain.

short shifters dont damage trasmissions, drivers do

I was getting worried coz I just got my B&M and was about to install it.

I was just about to buy 1 too. I'm going to use that car for track racing. So any opinions? Shall i buy 1 or not? I drove a short shifter before and it feels a lot better than the regular 1's. If it damage the tranny then i don't think i should get 1 then. I'm only using that car for track racing. So any opinion would help.

thats correct..... i blew my synchro's partially cuz of my shifter.. partialyl cuz of me :) but ye.. i rebuilt my tranny and when i did so i put in the oem shifter... and sold my short shifter... totally not worth it

When I first installed my SS, I would gring the gears occasionally until I got used to it. I think because of the ability to shift a little faster may increase your chances of damaging the tranny IF you try to shift too fast. The syncros don't have enough time to match the gears correctly. I shift pretty slow, I just like the feel of the SS.

I am such an idiot, I don't know what synchro is. But the way I drive and shift is always have the clutch press down completely for every gear change, and I always rev-match when down shifting.

never liked short shifters, always found it hard to get in gear.
|
Put about 60kms on mine and no problems whatsoever, its a hurst shifter and the car has 240 000kms on it. So i say its mostly driver when it comes to short shifters screwing trannies. And Dan you dont know how to drive :p

OEM shifter 4 Life
do you really think you're faster because of your short shifter? |
im good 0.076 seconds faster i would say! Personally though i've had two short shifters, a cheap one i got with a car that made my tranny grind occansionally and didn't feel so hot. My current shifter i paid a good buck for but it feels as good if not better then stock. The throws are tiny like an S2000, the whole "H" pattern seems to have been shrunk to half the size. I would not go back to OEM in a sports car...
