shifting problem

Hey guys..

I have a shifting problem. I have a short shifter that I recently installed on my Ek hatch. Whenever I shift, whether stock shifter or short, the shifts were never smooth, especially getting it into FIRST gear and reverse. Especially reverse. It cannot go into reverse the first time.. I always have to jam it in there 3 or 4 times for it to properly engage into gear. When I put it into first, I also literally have to try an jam it in there... Both shifters were relatively harder to shift than other cars. Does this mean that I don't have a good tranny? (in my estimation, my tranny is perfect). Ive changed my clutch and tranny fluids recently. What about a faulty shift linkage? What do I do to get smooth shifts?

First of all reverse will never really shift well on civics, once there are a few kms on them it will always kind of grind going into reverse, sometimes I have to put it in first then reverse, this is caused by the design of the reverse gear. This is a straight cut gear and there is no syncro on that part of the tranny. So because there is no syncro and you are changing the direction of the output shaft in the tranny, when its idling in neutral the output shaft is turning one driection, then when you put the clutch in, it doesnt stop completly, becuase there is no syncro. When you ask it to stop completly for reverse, that is why it grinds, it stops suddenly. As for the other gears, if the clutch is on its way it will load up the output shaft a little not allowing the gears to slide smoothly or you have a damaged syncro.

I have a similar problem with my short shifter. My problem is that I can't get the car in 1st gear if I am rolling just a little bit. I have to be dead stop to put the car in 1st otherwise I can't.

My problem is that the shifts aren't smooth. There's way more resistance in the shifts of my car than other cars. Will changing my shift linkage help?

if you want to downshift into first the best way to do it is to tap the gas before popping it in to match the synchros and it will fall in. try it,pump it to 5000 and try putting it into first right after and letting theclutch out all before the needle drops below 3000 and it will be a smooth as butter downshift. it might throw uforward a bit the first time, so disengage the clutch slowly... be more agressive with that first gear... its the fun one

oh, and my 96 ek has the same problem with the tranny... just throw it in first and then back in reverse... if its not going easy, put it in first and start to disengage the clutch so the car starts to move forward (you don't actually have to move it alot, just like 1cm) and then put it in reverse right after and i bet it will fall right in...
