Shift linkage pin removal?

hey guys,

is there a tool to get out the pin in the shift linkage? I have been trying to hammer it out for the past couple days and it wont budge...any ideas?

would my only alternative be to drill it out? i've been trying to save the pin...

Thanks

8 mm punch is what you need I believe

It's tough getting it out for the first time.. like Bruno said an 8mm punch is best because it fits perfectly around the pin.

You could use a flat head and hit the corner of the pin, but that's not gonna apply as much force on the pin as the punch itself.

man, I've seen this so many times on Honda-tech... everyone swears by the 8 mm punch and a heavy hammer... they say 3 hits and it's out. Some choose to go from the top and some from the bottom... that part is up to you.

there isn;t enough room to go from the top, but i have been using a torx screw driver to hit it with..

the outer part of the screw driver fits perfectly around the pin...maybe i need to raise the car up a bit so i can get a better swing on the hammer...

think if i put some wd40 on there it would help?

thanks guys...

yeah wd40 for sure... leave it to sit overnight... then try the next day. you can go in from the top, I know ppl do it... they weld an 8 mm punch on a long rod, and they just go from the top. as for your tool of choice... I recommend buying a punch. the torx may actually be spreading the spring pin every time you hit it, only jamming it more. use the proper tool.

i just used a bolt for mine, i made sure the bolt was the same diamater as the hole, and i stuck it in and it pushed the pin out perfectly, i had no troubles at all and it cost nothing as the bolt was just lying around

Just make sure you don't slip with the hammer and smash your finger !

Best advice so far. I was trying to get a 1/2" detent pin out of a drive today using a screwdriver. No luck. It wasn't my shop but after looking I found a REAL punch. Two hits and pop. The guy I was with was amazed.

A lot of the energy you are transfering from the hammer head is being lost in the screwdriver handle. Go get a punch.

Save your money and use the right sized diameter socket from your socket set. Assuming you have a socket set.

If you want to go in from the top, then just attach a bunch of extensions to the socket.

I use an air hammer lightly, then once it moves, I have a long 6mm allen socket that I tap to get it out easy.

make sure the punch isn't a 8mm tapered punch but a 8mm punch with a flat bottom if you use a tapered punch you will ****** it further causing it to be further jammed. also it's best to go from the top and hit it down.
