Serious wheel rub problem...
So I just got Ikon 3 Apex wheels with Lexani 205/40z/R17 tires and my wheels rub like crazy making the smallest turns or going over little bumps :banghead: ... I'm driving a 2000 SiR with Eibach spotline springs... I'm really not sure what to do here, but I can't drive like this at all... I was thinking coil overs to raise it back up, but I thought this tire/rim combo was supposed to fit... any suggestions??

no man, if your car is to low they rub like a ***** which is what you got.... go with springs that drop to 1.7 or probably not much lower than that. I like the H&R's for the ek .... 1.7 and nice ride.
IMO coil overs suck if you go cheap on them |
1.7!!... The sportlines only dropped my car 1.6"... That's why I can't understand why I got this problem... everyone is saying my car should be fine. Should I consider rolling the fenders?
|
it may not rub the outer lip of your fender. could be IN your fender well too...... daily driver, i recommend 16's...17s are nice on cars that are only driven once in a while imo. dif tastes for everyone.
and, if you roll the fenders wrong, you could cause warping of the fender itself .... gotta be careful :s |
could cause cracks in the paint too...
sure you didn't get ones for the the other models of civic those a 1.8 drop depending on what you have in the car it could be a bit lower with the added weight.... I had them a while ago and they look lower than they state anyways I would just go with smaller rims, easier for a dd and you dont have to worry about rub and bumps as much. |
I would like to do that, but I just got these rims and there is really no chance in returning them... I was hoping I could make do with what I have...
|
i know that in my daily driver, my 2 10s in their box sinks my rear end a little bit...
got a lot of heavy stuff in your car? it's hard to roll the fenders without cracking paint or causing your fenders to ripple. it CAN be done, but i would get a pro/shop to do it..... is the rear tires rubbing too? or just the fronts??? you can use some chalk/chalk dust to see where it's rubbing..... cover your rubber in it, then turn the wheel each way ...... |
sounds like your only option is to buy different springs and raise that bad boy up... or buy some GOOD coil overs and do it all properly
good luck with whatever you choose |
Where do the rub? What offset are the wheels?
The 96-00 Civics have a small clip on the inside of the fenderwell that holds the fenderliner in place. ALOT of the time, its simply the wheels touching these clips. My 98 had the same problem on 17s with H&R Sport springs. |
yeah, i'd find out WHAT and WHERE it's rubbing first, before dumping money into suspension.
turn your wheels and have a friend and a flashlight and both take a look, see where it's smacking. it could be a minor fix as DumbasSi was saying :D |
probably because of your soft shocks.
eibachs on stock shocks correct? |
yo i have the same problem n just put on some new 15 inch....
i had TOKICO shock with TEIN S.TECH springs n it was rubbing mad crazy...so i had to downgrade my 17 to 15 inch... |
i used 17 inch wheels on my 98 civic for many years w/o rubbing issues.
look on the inside of the wheel, what's it say the offset is?? it's usually cast into where the hub mounting surface is. it has nothing to do AT ALL with your suspension. it ALL has to do with your offset and rolling diameter. |
The offset is +40... i called Ikon to make sure it was correct... they told me those rims are made for civics and the offset is very close to stock... I think Kwasley is right... I only rub at the back when I go over bumps and my backend dipps down because of the soft suspension (eibach sportlines on stock shocks)... And the front rubs when turning because of the lean... I think I'm gonna go with coilovers to get a stiffer ride and raise it up a bit... what do you guys think??... good call??
|
in the front, remove the clip that is at the apex of the fender opening.
at the rear, remove those stupid rubber trim peices. when I had 17s, I could tuck my wheels fully into my wheelwells and turn them lock to lock without rubbing... thing is my offset was 42, not 40, but hopefully your tires are a manufactured a lil slimmer than mine. |
Thx everyone for your help... I went to one of the TCC affiliates and he confirmed it was because of 2 things...
1) My offset... The tires do stick out just a little too much. 2) My car is too low the suspension is too soft. Sooo... I asked the questions "will coilovers solve my problem?" I knew the answer, but wanted it to be confirmed from a pro... and "Yes" was the reply. I don't have tons of money to spend, so omni sports was my final decision... I got a good deal, and from searching the net I have heard a lot more positive reviews than negative... |
so would a 38 offset be better ?

I would stick to the stock 45 offset and a tire that was close to stock width. A 5-7mm lower offset with a 20-25mm wider tire will really push the edges outwards and will potentially rub with a lowered suspension.
With the police targeting modified vehicles, the last thing you need is a car that could be deemed unsafe becuase the tires rub. |
so the rims I like are 17 x 7 with 205/40/17 tires and the offset is either 38 or 40. I just read that 38 isnt good so how it 40 ? Im adding a custom air ride in time so I just dont wanna rub. Ive been told I could have 17 x 7.5 but I dont know the offset. Just looking for some help guys thanks :)
