Hi guys,

Throughout my searching, I've found a ton of information about chipping ecu's but wasn't able to find any difinitive answers on what I was looking for.

I have a jdm d15b in my '91 hatch. It is running obd0 and a chipped pr4 ecu. I know nothing about the ecu and what the mods are, except that it provides vtec at 5k, and its way too rich.

I should go back a step. I took the motor out of another '91 that unfortunatly slid under a truck. I basically swapped a complete running drivetrain into my car to replace the anemic d15b2.

So now I'm having way more fun with my car than I used to but there a couple things I don't really like. First is not knowing what is done to the pr4 ecu, second is that a vafc is used to trick the ecu into not making the car look like a diesel under load.

Can an obd0 ecu, namley my pr4, be chipped to provide the same fuel/timing curves as those found in a p28 (usdm) or p08 (jdm) SOHC vtec ecu? And, what is the usual cost involved in having the chip burned and replaced?

Is it possible for an obd0 ecu to contain what I'm assuming to be two different maps, one for vtec, and one not.

Sorry for the questions. I'm new to modding hondas, but can geneally figure my way around anything mechanical.

well the vafc is making vtec work while using a pr4. You can mod some obd0 ecus to control a 1 wire vtec setup, but the parts list is like 12-14 parts. Without a vtec ecu you don't have a nonvtec and vtec fuel/ignition maps, its just the one map.
The pw0 and pr3 are obd0 vtec ecus and chipping a pr3 is simple.
Now, IMO obd0 rom editors are poor compared to obd1 (crome/uberdata), excpet for hondata, which is $$$ compared to using BRE/TurboEdit (obd0 rom editors). But for your purpose a chipped pr3 would do the job well and converting to obd1 would be pretty much pointless, same with spending the loot on the hondata.

Thanks for the info and tips. I had thought that I'd be stuck being forced into an obd1 conversion. That is something that is way out of my budget at this time. I'll keep my eyes peeled for an pw0 or pr3.
