running without a filter on the track???
 

how would this affect my engine if i were to just take off the filter off my short ram on a road course. would it do my motor any harm or will it yield positive gains? i was thinking about taking off my filter when i get to shannonville this weekend to run but i want to know if it's a bad idea. i've seen guys run velocity stacks with an air scoop where their headlight is. i know putting on a velocity stack on is a completely different thing but this was just something i was wondering about while sitting at work today.

Well first of all a short ram is useless. Wether you have a filter on it or not does not matter since your already sucking hot air from the engin in anyway. Spend a few bucks and a little time and get yourself a full cold air WITH an AEM or K&N high proformance filter and run that.

ok there buddy, short ram is useless. this is not a intake debate. short rams make the same power as cold air does but the powerbands are different. if you knew your **** you'd know that short ram is better for a road course because of the response. don't tell me what i need to get instead because that's not the point of this thread.

agreed....my short ram dynoed with more usable power than the CAI i was using (same day, next run i took the CAI off and used SRI)

hmm.....well i dont think it would cause any immediate damage to the car....but logically it should yield better throttle response....try it and tell me how it goes=)

just dont do any "off roading" hahaha...just keep your filter on...a velocity stack can still be filtered and in the least case "screened"

so in least case, screen you intake...metal mesh filter perhaps

why not put panty hose over it? just to keep it clean a bit more than an open intake

make sure you put it on super tight, woudlent want to suck that in.

Scrub your engine bay before you remove the filter.

:haha: panty hose, you guys kill me. well i'll be at shannonville so i don't think i'll be sucking up dirt unless someone did a crazy wipe out infront of me and kicked dirt up in the air. i think i'll just take off the filter and see how it goes. dirty engine bay shouldnt be an issue. i just spent 2 hours the other day cleaning my engine bay so i should be good :).

velocity stock is pretty much useless until your turnign like 8500 and above with cams that make power past that point

keep your filter and clean it before you go

your not gonna be any better without your filter so why not just keep it on

maybe not oil your filter if you want that extra .000005 more cfm of flow

I would either clean the filter, or run without it, but will use nothing else to screen the pipe. One time, I was washing my engine bay and I put a plastic bag over the pipe. Forgot to take it off, started the engine and it made a big pop sound. Lucky, the bag popped but didn't go into the engine.

We can try it out on the track.

its a ****ty paper ractive filter so i cant really clean it. i'm not taking my filter off until i get to the track....there's no way i'm driving all the way to shannonville without one, that is just nuts.

is the extra 2hp you'll gain at the crank worth risking ****ing up your engine?

if yes then go ahead and take it off.. if no then just drive with it on..

or spring for a K&N

Mine is some crappy cone filter that I have beeing using for 3 or 4 years. I just wash it with soap and whatnot. Seems fine to me.

I don't think the risk out weights the gain...you never know what fluke could happen, leaf or what not right into your motor

If so, what's the point? Doubt you would notice difference in any sense.

i'm not looking to do this so i can spank everyone there. it would just be fun to see if it makes any difference. i'm not worried about anything flying into the motor. its a full track and traffic isn't really a problem. anyways, i'll let everyone know how it goes :).
