running rich

im running so RICH my eyes are burning, ????

new o2, new thermostat, computer is stock, and correct for engine,

maybe cause I have gutted cat???

imported_gatherer 25-Oct-2003 11:34 PM

ummm that would not cause you to run rich .. that would just cause bad emissions which could cause your eyes to burn :p

if you are running rich ... start checking sensors... is the ECU throwing a code? if so which one?

Blue Dream 26-Oct-2003 11:47 AM

no codes causing rich condition, just getting code 20 - eld

my tps is not setup correct.
timing is off maybe cam/ignition timing?

dingus8 26-Oct-2003 02:52 PM

gutted cat = bbbbwwwaaaahhhhhhhh bup burp fart fart....conclusion = gay

thanks for butt ******* my ozone for 1 hp gain in yoru shitty 4th gen...

coreyhayman 26-Oct-2003 05:18 PM

my cars runs really rich, u cna smell it....my 02's gone plus gutted cat and chipped ecu

Blue Dream 26-Oct-2003 06:09 PM

i start it up and see BLACK

dingus8 27-Oct-2003 12:18 AM

get a afc and tune that **** man...you are losign hp that rich...filling up wiht carbon adn washign your rings out....adn butt fuckathoning my o zone :tsk:

red90dx 27-Oct-2003 12:42 AM

are you an e-test guy or something..

it shouldnt run rich....not shooting codes and im running the right ecu for the motor..

dingus8 27-Oct-2003 01:35 PM

giv'er a good tune up then...fuel filter plugs wires put soem injecotr cleaner in her....adn no I'm jsut a guy who has to breathe the air

is that your answer for everything... get a VAFC??

there are two sensors that govern fueling at startup - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor, and Intake Air Temperature Sensor.

If those two check out, move onto TPS sensor and MAP sensors. The test procedure for each is in the Chilton manual.

imported_JookSingKid 27-Oct-2003 02:12 PM

Have you checked your plugs yet?
what kind of spark plugs are you using?
What kind of fuel are you using?
Are you running a stock or chipped ECU?

red90dx 27-Oct-2003 03:27 PM

ngk wires
ngk sparkplugs
non chipped ecu

B....
i notice when the thermostat opens it runs a little leaner.

bbarbulo 27-Oct-2003 03:30 PM

take out the ECTS and test it in hot water. in the chilton there is a resistance table for each temperature range. it may be thinking that it's really cold outside, in which case cars run better rich (easier starting) so it dumps lotsa fuel in.

red90dx 27-Oct-2003 03:54 PM

i dont have a chilton manual, just crappy hayes.

red90dx 27-Oct-2003 03:57 PM

b....its not only on startup its running rich,
it runs pretty black when i start it up, the plugs are BLACK carbon, then the temp rises and fan comes on, its not that bad, then if i crack the throttle a bit i see it come out again.

bbarbulo 27-Oct-2003 04:02 PM

The ECTS governs it all the time. In some cases, there are two ECTS's one for the temp gauge, the other for the ECU only. The ECU one may have failed or may be working half-assed. It's worth checking out. Another one is IAT sensor, just hook up an ohm meter to it, and then warm the sensor side of it with your hands, and see if the resistance changes smoothly as it should. If not, then it's telling the engine the intake air is way colder than it really is. I'm not that familiar with the 4th gen models, so I don't know if you have one or two ECTSs. Basically what you need to do is check under Emissions and Driveability section in your manual to see the sensors involved in closed loop operation, and test each sensor according to the procedures.
