Rod Knock
well i just recently swapped the ZC from my old hatch into my sedan, was running fine for awhile lastnight after the swap then on the way home my one plug wire came off slightly, so dennis and i stopped and put it back on then i heard a slight dreaded *knock knock knock*
i just drove it alot easier for the night, drove it to work and back in the morning, then ran to dennis's house, on my way home about 10 seconds from my house, it shuts off, restart it and the knock was considerably worse, now, is there a way to fix rod knock as long as nothings damaged? maybe the rod cap is loose? i dunno, any ideas people? its going in my garage tommorow night and the oil pans coming off |
spun a bearing im assuming, beating on it??? ask blair same thing happened to him lol
|
if it is a spun bearing, how would i fix it?
i did beat on it when it was in my hatchback alot, like did about 9 - 10 passes down the track in one night, accelerate quick onto the highway etc etc, and i did beat on it a bit lastnight, but that was just on on ramps |
rebuild it.....in other words, not worth it. Invest in a better motor
|
i already rebuilt it last year

well i know people who have spare zc's lying around and what not, grab new bearings and crank and put her together, basically all i can do at this point, i have no money for a new motor and i'm 4 grand in debt

ah man....all that work and its already messed.
I would say if it was just a rod bearing you might be able to get away with re-using that engine. But if the main bearing spun the engine would need some serious machine work. And even if it was just a rod bearing the rod may have been damaged and might need to be replaced. Which sucks because that means the heads gotta come off and the pistons/rods gotta come out. But if its not that bad you could probably find another ZC crank and get some new bearings and replace the crank with the engine in the car....although i wouldn't want to be the one doing the work it is possible. |
yea I think that might be my only option andrew, i need this car to get back and forth to work.
i may just slap some new bearings in it, and if it cures it for awhile thats good and i can rebuild my single cam and find out why that cylinder went dead, fix it, slap on the mpfi manifold and drive that while i fix the zc properly |
have you had a pro listen to it? maybe you should? this is something that needs to be heard to correctly diagnose.
|
but you're so far away from us steve:wink:
Derek, does it sound like all hell is breaking loose inside of your engine when you rev it from like 2500-5000rpm? Is there any metal flakes or chunks in your oil? |
I agree with Steve, you should have a pro listen to the noise. Your problem might be simpler then you think. If it is a spun rod or crank bearing, then it is highly likely you will have severe scoring and you don't want to get into that.
|
I can tell you right away weather or not its a spun bearing, I learned from how to check when I spun a bearing in my ZC. PM me if you need anything Derek.

Is there any metal flakes or chunks in your oil? no metal chunks that i've seen, i'll look close when i drain the oil, but it didnt sound that bad untill lastnight when it quit then i restarted it, and i only drove it down the street the rest of the way to my house, but when its cold, you cant hear it knocking, only when it warms up when the oil gets thinner (running 10w30) |
lmao...look at ur own signature picture on this message board..no wonder ur engine is fuxored.....lol
|
most likly its a spun bearing if it is it isnt worth driving on it cuz your going to fu<k your crank its okay if it ware's down a little cuz you can always machine it and over size the bearings but if its over 30 tho your going to have to replace the crank

switching oils wouldn't do it
