Unhappy Ringing sound from engine; what's wrong??

Hi guys. I've noticed my engine started to make a soft but noticeable ringing noise when I have my car idle/running. It came after I had my timing belt / alternator belt / water pump changed last week. The guy that did the job for me wasn't too happy with me cuz I bought the parts for him to do the job, so he couldn't make money off me from the parts. I'm worried that he might've screwed something on my car on purpose. Do you have any idea what this might be?

You know, I thought he's a good guy but when it comes to money everyone shows their true face. It really sucks. I won't ever take my car there anymore, but if you guys could shed some light on why there is a ringing noise, it would be much appreciated. Thanks guys.

Yes I have A/C, but the ringing sound is there even when A/C is off...

I have yet to check where exactly the sound comes from though...

Can't exactly diagnose a noise over the net man... you gotta tell us where it is originating.

well thats why I let my Mechanic buy the parts and sell them to me at a reasonable price.....

I mean if he's doing the work I don't mind supplying him with extra profit... better then letting some other place get it ... it's the loyality factor ... if I'm loyal with the work I bring him he'll be loyal with the work he does...

ok now to your issue....

I had a timing belt and water pump and practically a complete overhual of a bunch of stuff done... at one shop... the work was great and the quality was bang on.

however I like you noticed an idle rattle about a month after this work was done. being confused I took it back to them and said I noticed a rattle when I hit 3500 RPM (which was where it happened to occur for me) well they jacked up the car and well it was obvious then that it was the heat sheild well a chunk of it came off with the blow torch and my mechanic didn't charge me more then like 20 bucks since it didn't take long to do...

check the heat shield under the car.... reason I say this is when I had the rattle I thought it was the passenger side under the hood looking under the hood sounded like the driver side... jacking the car up it was the heat shield ... rattles are hard to find jack it up.

ok another rattle story. before I took the car to my mechanics the valves were way outta spec and rattling at idle ... I'd suggest a valve adjustment

ok another rattle story...

a friend had a screw on his turbo manifold came off and caused a rattle and a lack of boost....

ok another rattle story...

my muffler fell off once and it caused some rattling till I got a new one

most common thing after timing belt/water pump change

the timing belt has too much tension , it is probably not put on right

my dads accord had the same sound

If the timing belt's been put on too tight, would you notice a drop in fuel economy too? cuz that's what I've observed! Would they charge me a crap load just to fix that?

no the result of a too tight belt is a belt that breaks sooner due to stress.... I don't think fuel economy would be effected unless the belt is off by a tooth

don't accord's and preludes have auto tensioner's for the timing belt?

work with harmonic balancer.

How is the tightness of the belt determined? Dosn't the belt itself have a pre-determined tension? If it helps, the belt I got is OEM. Thanks!
